The U.S. Postal Service formally committed on Tuesday to keeping a post office in Milltown.

U.S. Rep. Rush Holt announced the plan during a press conference at Borough Hall. Also on hand for the event were Milltown Borough Clerk Michael Januszka and Michael Piparo, supervisor of customer service at the Milltown post office.

Club has made a splash in Milltown for 60 years

Sixty years ago, the Brookside Swim Club’s pool was 50 feet long and 10 feet deep.

Today, the pool has expanded to 90 feet in length and 40 feet in width, and ranges from 3 and a half to 14 feet in depth. It holds 300,000 gallons of water. In addition to modernized facilities, the club offers a myriad of programming, swim lessons and other activities for members.

JAMESBURG — Resident Franceline Ehret began her career with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority as a toll collector.

That career, which included nearly 30 years of toll collecting and later involvement with the union representing the authority’s workers, culminated in Ehret’s being named Labor Leader of the Year at the 2012 Shirley Chisholm Awards ceremony April 21.

EAST BRUNSWICK — A large plastic bin full of orchids sat on the patio table in Robert Kalt’s backyard.

The flowers, salvaged from centerpieces at a recent event by one of the “rescue teams” of Kalt’s local eco-business The Special E, were destined for residents at a local nursing home on Mother’s Day.

JAMESBURG — Monroe Community Church wants people to do some ‘sole’ searching for their second shoe collection benefiting CUMAC ECHO of Paterson.

The church, located at the Jamesburg Senior Center, 139 Stevens Ave., Jamesburg, will be a weekend collection site throughout May. Collection hours on Saturdays are 3-5 p.m., and Sunday hours are 9 a.m. to noon.

OLD BRIDGE — A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information relating to the two bank robberies that have hit the township in the last month.

According to police, at 2:19 p.m. on May 9, an unknown suspect entered the TD Bank located at 3024 Route 516. The suspect handed the teller a note demanding money, before fleeing with an unknown amount of currency.

County residents encouraged to practice ‘grasscycling’

A s the height of the mowing season approaches in May and June, the Middlesex County Improvement Authority’s (MCIA) Recycling Division has launched its annual campaign to inform residents about the benefits of “grasscycling.”

Grasscycling is the practice of leaving short grass clippings on the lawn rather than bagging and dragging them to the curb.
