Republicans vow to work with Democrats on Milltown council

This election had no shortage of controversy and rhetoric at every level of government. In Milltown, two Democrats were elected to the Borough Council, which shifts control from Republicans to Democrats.

First, we would like to congratulate Kevin Bosworth and Joseph Cruz on their victory. We also would like to say thank you to outgoing the council president, Sean Leary, for his three years of service to Milltown and to Thomas Harknett for his countless hours of volunteer service on Milltown committees and boards.

The Democrats made a lot of promises during the campaign, and it is important for them to know that Republicans will work with them to keep those promises which include no increase in property taxes; forcing the owner of the Ford Avenue complex to clean up the site while attracting environmentally sound tenants; and the preservation of the property on Washington Avenue as open space, not allowing construction of senior housing on that tract of land.

While we are disappointed that Republicans Leary and Harknett did not win, we feel we presented an accurate accounting of the facts to our residents. For those who voted for our candidates, we thank you for your support. For those who did not, your voices were heard loud and clear. We need to do a better job in the future to win your confidence back, and we will. Mayor Gloria Bradford, Councilman Tom Buck and Councilman Gary Walters pledge to work with the new Democrat-controlled council in January to continue to do what is best for Milltown residents.

      Edward H. Winant
