      Awards ceremony,
      contests set at VFW

      Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4589 and its Ladies Auxiliary will hold their annual Voice of Democracy, Youth Essay, Patriotic Pen and Patriotic Arts awards program at 2 p.m. on Feb. 23 at the post home, Daniel Road, Spotswood.

      The event also will feature the selection of Poppy Queen and Post Queen. Poppy Queen contestants must be between the ages of 7 and 11.

      Post Queen hopefuls must be between the ages of 14 and 17.

      Winners of the Patriotic Arts contest will be presented with awards. Contest participants, all from Spotswood and Monroe schools, will receive a token of appreciation.

      The public is welcome.

      ‘Meet the Musician’

      The Monroe Township Cultural Arts Commission will offer "Meet the Musician: Johann Sebastian Bach" at 2 p.m. on Feb. 22 at the Richard P. Marasco Performing Arts Center at Monroe Township High School, Perrineville Road.

      Actor Dennis Kobray, who will portray the well-known composer, will discuss the motivation behind Bach’s groundbreaking music.

      Kobray also will play several classical selections.

      General admission is $2. Patrons will be admitted free of charge.

      Tickets will be available at the door. Reservations are not required.
