The play concerns events surrounding the tragedy of 9/11. Drawn from interviews with members of the Manhasset Community Reformed Church, Manhasset, N.Y., the 50-minute drama tells the story of New York City schoolteacher Sue Lucarelli, who became known as "The Bear Lady." After Sept. 11, one child in Lucarelli’s classroom needed a hug. She hugged him and gave him a bear to hold. The child’s need and the teacher’s gesture were the beginning of a national endeavor. With her fellow church members and members of other churches across the United States, Lucarelli helped deliver more than 55,000 teddy bears to children in New York City in the months following 9/11. The March 9 performance is free of charge and open to the public. For more information, call (732) 545-1005. |
