Sport Shorts The Monroe U14 boys’ basketball team returned from Villanova University, Pennsylvania, after a great tournament. The boys won their pool with their first win coming over Ewing Township. Mark Gulick and Joe Costa combined for 34 points, while Ryan Cushman added nine. In their second game, they defeated Winslow Township behind 17 points from Kyle Horsch. In the championship game they lost to Diamond State, the No. 1-ranked team out of Delaware, 49-46. Horsch played an outstanding game, along with Cushman. Mark Gulick, Joe Costa, James Pellino, Vincent Mahmoud and Matt Troncone all played well throughout the weekend. The East Brunswick Goal Getters, an U13 girls’ premier soccer team, took first place in the Marlboro Soccer Tournament over the weekend. The team defeated Middletown 1-0, the Ocean Pearls 2-1 and the Wyckoff Torpedoes 4-0, and tied the Ocean Barracudas 1-1 to win the title. The players are Moha Antani, Mariam Bestawros, Katie Chace, Carolyn Chu, Marisa Estremera, Monica Farag, Kaitlin Gaston, Jamie Hatala, Julie Kliegman, Nicole Knief, Chelsea McCulley, Jacqueline Mulé, Karlee Owsiak, Courtney Sachs, Kim Soltys and goalie Kerri Williams. On Sunday, the Monroe Jr. PeeWees football team played its first game of the season against the Linden Tigers. The Jr. PeeWees came out strong in the first quarter, which was started with an interception by Nick Dini. Dini ran the ball to set up the first touchdown of the game by quarterback Alex Vizcaino. In the second quarter, Kyle Mike ran the ball for big gains. Matt Gorham recovered a Linden fumble, Kyle Mike had another great run, and Vizcaino passed the ball to Steven Calavano, who ran in the second touchdown for Monroe. Dini ran in the extra point to make the halftime score 13-0. Defensively, Marc Tyson, Xavier Selby, and Nick Cantor kept the Tigers from any scoring opportunities. In the third quarter, fumble recoveries by Jake O’Brien, Nick Cantor and Jason Spennato enabled Monroe to hold Linden scoreless. In the fourth quarter, Kyle Mike again ran for a huge gain, bringing the ball to the 1-yard line. Vizcaino ran in for the third touchdown making the final score 19-0. It was a great team effort with exceptional plays by Tyler Paquette, Danny Roberts, Marcus Moonesar, Joe Naddeo, Matt Yoffredo, John Albecker, Corey Deak, Danny Ficci, Ryan Fleming, Michael Walp, Willie Wager, Jason Saley, Matt Garabaldi, Ryan Genevieve and Robert Mucciolo. The following are the results of the Tamarack Women’s Nine-Hole Golf Association’s Aug. 21 outing. The game played was even holes, 1/2 handicap. Edythe Gutman won the A Flight with 14.5, followed by Suzanne Levine (15.5), Sandi Sulam (16) and Mary Ann Gelsinon (16). Diane Del Masto won the B Flight with 11, followed by Bobbi Block (12), Marion Batchelor (13.5) and Jean Ertle (13.5). Roberta Metzger won the C Flight with 11.5, followed by Mary Thompson (11.5), Gloria Frock (13.5) and Lory Leavitt (14.5). Block had fewest putts with 15. The East Brunswick Cyclones, an U13 travel soccer team, finished runner-up in Rockaway’s kickoff summer tournament. They finished with a 2-1-1 record. The Cyclones played teams from Mount Olive, West Milford, Somerset Hills and Vernon. The team members are Timmy Arnold, Andy Balint, Pat Devito, Brian Haydon, Dominik Kochan, Scott Martynuk, Tommy Matsay, Dan McAleer, Anthony Noday, Ryan Norland, Jordan Pease, A.J. Reichert, Shayan Salar, Zack Stahl, David Swissman, David Wescott, Andy Wolverton and Matt Yu. The Central Jersey Lightning 12U and 14U traveling softball teams are currently looking for girls for their fall and 2004 spring seasons. The tryout schedule is as follows: Aug. 30 at 9 a.m. and Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. All tryouts will be held at the Middlesex Vocational High School, East Brunswick campus. The school is located at the corner of Summerhill Road and Rues Lane, next to the Brunswick Square Mall. The softball fields are located behind the school. The West Windsor Wildcats will hold tryouts for the 16U and 18U girls fastpitch softball teams on Sunday at 2 p.m., and Thursday at 6 p.m. Teams will compete at college showcase tournaments, regional qualifiers and national tournaments. The program includes fall ball and winter training. All tryouts will be held at West Windsor Community Park. The Jersey Girls Fastpitch Softball League is looking for teams for the fall league. Games will be played on Saturdays and Sundays, starting in September. Age groups are U10, U12, U14 and U16. The team will be professionally trained and coached with post-high-school-season training, involvement in winter indoor leagues, State Cup and multiple tournaments. Games will be played in the spring season. Boys born between 8/1/88 and 7/31/89 who are dedicated to soccer are invited to try out. This is a team travel league, with no AAU regional teams. Divisions are for 12U (60/90), 13U, 14/15U and 15/16U or 16U. One game a week on Saturdays, with optional weeknight games. Season runs from late August until late October. Cost is $75 per team plus forfeit deposit.
