Board was wise to table Main Street application have just finished reading your Spotswood Planning Board article ("Mixed Reviews on Main Street Proposal," Sentinel, Sept. 5), and it amazes me. I was appointed to the Teaneck Planning Board many years ago and served for several years. Whenever there was dissent among the members, we normally postponed the issue until the next meeting or until we were made more aware of all the facts. In this case it seems as though Mayor Barry Zagnit and board member John Meyer wanted an immediate, reckless passage. I commend Curtis Stollen, Sandra Kerwin and Leo Servis for being instrumental in tabling this action for another meeting, with more information being supplied by the builder. Zagnit claims future developers will be turned off if land-use requirements are too restrictive. That’s why the Planning Board is there — to make certain that they remain restrictive and follow all the rules. The property in question does not seem to be conducive to any type of venture that will increase traffic flow, and this would greatly limit use since there is already a problem at that point. As for the mayor’s thought that this would increase tax ratables, I should like to remind him that an unlikely venture of this type will increase Spotswood’s services and payroll. James P.
