The Monroe Mitey Mites Pee Wee football team improved their record to 3-2 this past weekend by beating Sayreville, 14-0. It was a total team effort for the Wolverines when both offense and defense battled the entire game to come out on top. Monroe’s defense of Evan Kaiser, Nick Romano and Bobby Steffe contributed to shutting out the Sayreville Leprechauns. Monroe’s offensive backfield of D.J. Mascali, Matt Siemons and Chris Cordova ran the ball up and down the field the first half, wearing down the Sayreville defense. Monroe scored with a minute to go before the half when they ran the no-huddle offense and quarterback Zack Gorham hooked up with Cordova for two receptions and then found Chris Germano open downfield for a 20-yard pass reception setting up the touchdown. Gorham ran an 18-yard sweep across the goal line to go into the half 7-0. Wide receiver Ryan Fisher opened up the second half with a 25-yard reception to keep the momentum going for Monroe. Nick Isola set up the final touchdown of the game by battling his way to the one-yard line, allowing Zach Gorham to punch in from the one.

The East Brunswick Bombers 9-year-old baseball team made it to the finals of the Roselle Park tournament in the challengers bracket, needing to win two games from a Mountainside team that had previously beaten them in the semifinals. In game one of the finals, East Brunswick came back from a 4-2 deficit, and walked away with a 9-4 win to force a deciding game five days later. The Bombers were ready to erupt, and erupt they did. They blew the game open in the first inning, scoring seven runs on their way to a 14-4, four-inning victory, as the East Brunswick Bombers won their first tournament. It was a total team effort by all the players, including Ian Alexander, Ryan Barrett, Ryan Berdoff, Brian Connors, Ryan Hensperger, Zach Lublin, Philip Merolla, Alec Metsch, Mark Shapses, Rich Yura, Troy Zeiger, and tournament MVP Frankie Granito. Special thanks to Manager Phil Granito, Coaches Gary Berdoff, Bill Hensperger, and Dave Metsch. Besides winning the Roselle Park Championship, the Bombers also came in third in three other tournaments.
