      The USAG State Level 5 competition took place Jan. 17 at Egg Harbor Middle School, with Middlesex Gymnastics taking the second-place team award. A total of 39 gyms competed from around the state. Overall, the nine girls who competed on the team contributed to the award-winning performance.

      In the 10 1/2-year-old age group, Meghan Larkin from South River placed first in beam (9.6, a new state record), bars (9.3), floor (9.225) and AA with a score of 37.850. Amoi Greene and Sarah Contessa from Piscataway placed second (35.775) and fourth (35.325) in the AA, respectively, with Sarah placing second (9.45) on beam and fourth (9.05) on bars. Kristen McMullen from Milltown placed ninth (34.850) in the AA with a third place (9.425) on beam and a fourth place (9.25) on vault.

      In the 10-year-old age group, Melody Smith from South Amboy scored second (37.5) in the AA with a first place (9.5) on bars and a second place (9.4) win on beam.

      The 9- and 9 1/2-year-old age group included Breanna McGowan, who placed fourth (36.250), and Asya Cureton, who placed second (37.775) in the AA. Breanna placed second (9.425) on vault while Asya placed third (9.45) on beam and fourth (9.275) on vault.

      Honorable mention goes out to Brianna Strahm from Milltown and Caitlyn Selva from East Brunswick, who both did an outstanding job.

      Junior Rich Canuso, of Monroe, continues to hit well for the Rutgers University men’s baseball team. He had a big, two-run home run on Sunday, which brought RU back to a 3-3 tie against Old Dominion, and is hitting .381 (8-for-21) with one double, two home runs and nine RBIs. He is slugging .714 and owns a .533 on-base percentage.

      The Central Jersey Men’s Senior Baseball League is now accepting individual players and full teams for the upcoming 2004 season. The league is age 28 and over. Play starts in April and will include a 20-game schedule.

      The Executive Board of the Tamarack Women’s Nine-Hole Golf Association invites female golfers from Middlesex County to join members in playing a friendly, competitive round of golf on Thursday mornings from April 1 through Nov. 1. Golfers should have a knowledge of the rules of the game and be capable of playing the round in a timely fashion. Flights will be established depending on level of competency. Prizes are awarded for the weekly competitions and trophies are awarded at the closing luncheon in November to winners of tournaments.

      Any interested females, please call Joan at (609) 655-3606 or Inge at (732) 254-6289 for more details, and do plan to attend the general membership meeting on March 25 at 10:30 a.m. in the East Brunswick Public Library. The guest speaker at the meeting will be Randy Luberecki, PGA pro and manager of Tamarack Golf Course. His topic will be rules of golf.
