Calvano acted in best interests of residents

I am amazed at the undeserved attacks launched against East Brunswick Township Councilwoman Christi Calvano by Richard Klein, a member of the township Planning Board, just because she is not part of the mayor’s "yes" team ("Councilwoman’s Vote Irks East Brunswick Board Member," letters to the editor, Sentinel, June 4).

I should clarify to Mr. Klein that Councilwoman Calvano was elected to represent the interests of the people who voted for her, and voting yes for something that she did not have the time to study (more or less a week) would be a disservice to her constituents. Not at any moment did she say that she was against the project — she said it needed more study.

It is very strange that a project of this magnitude was rushed through the council in one week and approved by the mayor’s "yes" team when the lease for the actual tenants (Sam’s Club, Jason’s and the Flea Market) runs through 2008.

Meanwhile, for example, the township’s budget, which is already overdue, was not voted on yet.
