The U14 Boys Monroe Strikers got back to winning ways Sunday with a 1-0 win against New Providence Cougars. Matt Sepe and Adam Kennedy shared goalkeeper duties and recorded the fourth shutout of the season for the team. In an effort to break through the tough Cougar defense, Richard Zheng was moved from central defense to center forward. Zheng’s speed took the Cougar defense completely by surprise and the Strikers were finally able to penetrate and score after several nice build-ups from midfield. T.J. Benedict had a strong game in midfield along with Tim Gran, Dillon Card, Ryan Osborne and Kevin Leatherwood. Eric Somers was hard to contain up front, with support coming from wingers David Knotts and Nick Lazzaro. Led by Paul Michaud, Matt Sepe and Dillon Tringali, the defense held strong. The Strikers play their final home game next week and the outcome might very well decide this season’s flight champion.
The Monroe Xtreme U13 boys kept their winning ways going Sunday up in Bridgewater, coming away with a 5-0 victory. In the first half the Xtreme got a hard-fought goal from Eric Palisay to take a 1-0 lead. It stayed 1-0 until the start of the second half, when Timmy Gandy blasted a 35-yarder into the upper corner for a 2-0 lead. Ryan Miller hit the next one with a great pass from Anthony Torres, and the Xtreme led 3-0. The midfield, with the good play from Timmy Brix, Eric Paone, Adam Peterson and Jonathon Roman, controlled the middle of the field for the entire game. Shane Santiago playing forward, sent a chip into the box and Kevin LeBrun got a head on it, sending it into the corner for a 4-0 Xtreme lead. John Dougherty finished up the scoring with a left-footed laser into the back of the net, making it 5-0. The defense stepped up with tough play from Francis Leferrier and Harry Landy, marking the entire game and keeping the Bridgewater offense in check. Chris Pritzlaff played an inspired game in between the posts, stopping eight shots and coming away with a shutout for the Xtreme and keeping them unblemished in the loss column.
