In a hard-fought defensive battle, the East Brunswick Knights beat previously undefeated South Brunswick, 19-12. The East Brunswick Knights continue to roll as they improve their record to 7-0 in the 9U division of Central Jersey Basketball, with three games left to play in the regular season. The Knights are led by a dominating rebounding and scoring presence with Jake Krantz and Hayden Warren. Backing them up on the boards are forwards Matt Scoles, Spencer Grekoski, Kyle Danatos, Tyler Catarino and Patrick McCue. Zach Becker leads the team in breaking down the defense with key perimeter support from guards Anthony Quaglino, Sam Pavelchak and Christopher Goggin.
Monroe’s 11-year-old travel basketball team defeated a determined Hillsborough team, 48-40, Saturday at Monroe. Monroe’s balanced offensive attack was spearheaded by the sharp shooting of Matt Gorham, Mike Mahmoud and Alex Vizcaino, who combined for 34 points. Jimmy Small and Nick Dini contributed 11 points, four assists and four steals to the Monroe effort. Kashawn Strougn, Mike Walp, Mark Tyson and Woo-Joo Han combined for 22 rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Mike Scarrone played aggressive defense and had key rebounds for Monroe. Monroe Township’s 10-year-old boys travel basketball team won its 11th straight game with victories over Ocean (48-20), Edison (56-47) and Little Silver (46-27). Those victories helped the 10s earn one of the top four seeds in the upcoming Monmouth Youth Playoffs. Against Ocean, Victor Sorrento (13 rebounds), Ryan Germano and Peter Gulick combined for 32 points, while Tyler Cushman, Ryan Genevieve, Ahmid Williams, Chris Viani, Chris Laino, Brian Nale and Danny Brix combined for 14 points and 17 rebounds. The Edison game featured the front line of Brix and Germano as they combined for 33 points and nine rebounds. Other game contributors included Sorrento (14 rebounds), Cushman, Williams, Viani, Laino, Nale and Gulick as they amassed 24 points, 21 rebounds and six steals. The Little Silver game was highlighted by a 29-point performance by Genevieve and Brix (four steals), while Sorrento pulled down 12 rebounds. Other game contributors included Cushman, Williams, Viani, Laino, Nale and Gulick as they tallied 17 points and six steals. The 10s improved to 23-2 and finished Monmouth Youth League play with an 11-1 record and a three-way tie for second place.
