      Monroe Township’s 10-year-old boys travel basketball team advanced to the 11-year-old Red Division Championship game with a victory of Edison Township (48-34). Monroe’s defensive produced a second-half 11-3 run, which helped seal the victory and a chance to capture their second Central Jersey Basketball League Title in as many years. Danny Brix (five steals, two blocks), Victor Sorrento (seven rebounds), and Ryan Genevieve teamed up to produce a 30-point, 14-rebound performance, while Ahmid Williams (four steals), Tyler Cushman, Ryan Germano (eight rebounds), Chris Viani (three rebounds), Brian Nale, Chris Laino and Peter Gulick (four rebounds) tallied 17 rebounds and six steals to help seal their 26th victory of the season. The championship game will be played this weekend at South Amboy High School.

      Monroe Township’s 9-year-old boys travel basketball team defeated Allentown (28-8) in a nonleague campaign. Kevin Brix, Zach Gorham, Zach Pace, Nick Wolfson, Andy Dooley, Justin Fleites and Kyle Crothers made it into the scoring column, while the defense was lead by Dominick Morelli, Aaron Potter, Cameron Warech and Hector Marquez. The 9s improved their overall record to 18-5.

      The East Brunswick Wrestling Club (EBWC) B team topped off an outstanding year (9-1) by taking first place at the Mid Jersey League Wrestling Championships in Marlboro. East Brunswick was crowned the champs at the 11-team tournament, ahead of neighbors South River (second) and Monroe (third). Head coach Mike Duhigg was elated with the first-place showing and the solid performance of the team. It was business as usual with outstanding matches for first-place finishers Vinny Fioello (56), Ricky Perrine (63) and Garrett Cuddey (95). Garrett was also voted Outstanding Wrestler for the season. Also looking solid were Ryan Smolin (50), Jason Anderson (60), Michael O’Kane (73), Adam Pardo (80) and Colton Pennington (85), with all placing second. Michael Duhigg (67) and Sean O’Grady (95) finished fourth. Thanks to all coaches, volunteers and parents for a great season. EBWC will start up in November. For details, call (732) 390-1189.

      The Monroe 11-year-olds travel basketball team ended its season with a tough playoff loss to Woodbridge, 44-39, at Monroe on Sunday. Monroe fell behind early, 15-4, before fighting back to close the gap to 18-15 at halftime. Monroe’s swarming second-half defense closed the gap to just two points in the waning moments of the game. Woodbridge hit two key free throws to increase the lead to four and hold on for the win.

      Monroe’s 11-year-old travel squad is Alex Vizcaino, Matt Gorham, Jimmy Small, Michael Mahmoud, Nick Dini, Michael Walp, Michael Scarrone, Kashaun Stroughn, Woo-Joo Han and Mark Tyson.

      An over-30 men’s adult baseball team is looking for players for a competitive league. Games are played on Sundays from April through September.

      Due to recent snow days, South River Parks and Recreation has added an additional registration day for its spring sports registration. Anyone who may have missed the original dates may come to the Recreation Office, located at 1 William St. (trailer behind Lincoln School) between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday.

      Baseball/softball fee is $25. T-ball is for youngsters in enrolled in kindergarten for September through first grade; rookie league is for grades one and two; minor league is for grades three to five; major league is for grades six to eight; and girls softball is for girls ages seven to 15 (gidgets — seven to nine, juniors — 10-12 and seniors — 13-15).

      The fee for street hockey is $25. This program has been developed with the assistance of the New Jersey Devils, and is open to boys and girls who are South River residents between the ages of 5 and 16 (participants must be presently enrolled in kindergarten or higher). The teams will be grouped by age. Participants will play in sneakers and are required to purchase their own helmet with facemask. Games will be scheduled on Saturdays, and practices will be coordinated between each coach and the Recreation department. There is an additional fee for Sayreville residents.

      The East Brunswick Soccer Club is offering two $1,500 awards to present or former players. Application are available at East Brunswick High School, and are to be returned to Leslie J., Szukics, assistant principal, East Brunswick High School, 380 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, by April 1.

      The Monroe Junior Falcons wrestling team completed its season with a third-place finish in the Mid Jersey Midget Wrestling B Division Tournament, despite having filled 12 out of a possible 17 weight classes. Brian Diaz, Tom Himmelreich, Kyle Jensen, Nick Lombard and Harrison Utter all took first place at the league tournament in their respective weight classes. Stephen Karoly and Sal Profaci finished second, while Stephen McCann, Chaz Reid and Mathew Schweitzer finished fourth. The Junior Falcons also compiled a 10-1 dual-meet record with Jensen, Karoly and Himmelreich going undefeated. With returning B team members Cole Cussanelli, Kyle Lorfing, Anthony Russo, Trevor Santa Lucia and the tournament place-winners, the teams is looking forward to a competitive 2005-06 season.

      The Junior Falcon C team followed in the footsteps of their B division teammates. Although new to the sport, what the C team lacked in experience, they made up for with their hears and determination, according to coach Gary Freedman. At the C league tournament, the following wrestlers all placed in the top four at their respective weight classes: Logan Bussey, Derick Carpio, Christopher Cerniglia, Matthew Cerniglia, Ryan Carver, Shawn Gardini, Nick Hogan, Matthew Horn, Mathew Karabas, Nicholas Parente, Ryan Rushing, Thomas Toht, David Toss and Alex Widom.
