Pilots to offer free flights for young people
Young people ages 8-17 are invited to take to the skies at the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Chapter No. 315 Young Eagles Flight Rally set to begin at 10 a.m. on June 11 at Old Bridge Airport, 182 Pension Road. Rain date is June 12. Volunteer pilots will be on hand to explain how airplanes work and how to ensure that safety is the primary consideration before each flight. Interested young people will be able to take an orientation flight at no charge. Following the free flight, participants will receive a certificate making them official Eagle Flight members. The youngsters’ names will then be entered into the “World’s Largest Logbook,” which is on permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum, Oshkosh, Wis. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. and close at 1 p.m. Flights will begin soon after registration opens. Hot dogs and soft drinks will be available at a nominal fee to cover costs, but all flights are free of charge and voluntary on the part of the pilots involved. A registration form signed by a parent or guardian is required. In the event that a parent or guardian cannot be present at the event, forms will be available in advance. Only individuals ages 8-17 may participate in the program. Parents and other visitors may be accommodated with a flight if time and available pilots permit. The rally is part of the EAA Aviation Education Foundation’s Young Eagles program designed to inform youth about general aviation and recreational flying. The original goal was to provide 1 million young people with an airplane ride by the end of 2003, the 100th anniversary of powered flight and the 50th anniversary of the EAA. The goal was achieved, and the program was so successful that it is being continued. Volunteer EAA members also conduct Young Eagles flights individually. Blood drive, hoops event to aid student A blood drive on behalf of Frost School student Corey Muniz, 11, will be held from 2:30-7:30 p.m. on June 9 at Frost Elementary School, 65 Frost Ave., East Brunswick. Corey, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia, is going through chemotherapy and will require blood transfusions. The drive is coordinated by the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital blood program. A “Help Corey Conquer Cancer” Basketball Jamboree will be held June 17 from 6 to 10 p.m. and June 18 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Churchill Junior High School, Norton Road. The tournament will feature eight teams of fifth- and sixth-graders playing in a round-robin format. The event will also feature prizes , 50/50s, sports memorabilia, refreshments, a chance to win a 2005 Pontiac, and a dance performance by the First Position School of Dance. Trips open to residents, nonresidents, all ages The South River Office on Aging is sponsoring two upcoming trips for residents and nonresidents of all ages. A seven-night cruise to Bermuda will depart on Sept. 4. Cabin rates begin at $699, plus port taxes. A six-day new year’s trip to southern California will include a visit to the Tournament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, Calif. Cost is $1499, twin, including eight meals. Space is limited. Main St., Milltown, will hold a car wash June 5 from 1-5 p.m. at Milltown Borough Hall, Washington Avenue. Proceeds will benefit the church’s youth group mission trip. Widows and Widowers schedules June 12 social The Widows and Widowers (WOWs) Chapter of Middlesex County West will hold a social beginning at 7 p.m. on June 12 at the Belarussian American Center, Whitehead Avenue, South River. The June date is a departure from the group’s regular schedule — socials are usually held on the first Sunday of every month. Participants will listen to the music of Ed Goldberg. Admission is $8. Volunteers sought as reading, math partners Adult volunteers are sought for the Reading Partners and Math Partners summer enrichment programs at the Monroe Township Library, 4 Municipal Plaza. Volunteers will be paired with a school-age youngster to help the student practice his or her reading and/or math skills in a relaxed atmosphere during the summer vacation. Partners will meet together once a week at the library during July and August. Volunteer applications are available at the library. An orientation session for volunteers is planned. Senior Chai schedules luncheon, planting demo The next meeting of Senior Chai, a program of Jewish Family Service (JFS) of Southern Middlesex County, will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. on June 8 at the Jewish Congregation of Concordia, 20 Concordia Shopping Center, Monroe. The event will feature a kosher luncheon and a planting demonstration. Meeting participants will take home their own potted plant. Donation is $8, in advance. Reservations are required. Holocaust observance scheduled for June 5 The Henry Ricklis Holocaust Memorial Committee will hold its annual Yom Hashoa commemorative program at 1:30 p.m. on June 5 at Monroe Township High School, Perrineville Road. This year’s theme will be “Sixty Years After the Liberation of the Death Camps.” To mark the anniversary, six survivors, each representing 1 million silenced Jews, will share their experiences. In addition, there will be dramatic readings, interpretive dancing and music of the Holocaust. A memorial candle-lighting ceremony will take place from 1-1:30 p.m., prior to the program. Youth program on trips to Israel, dinner slated Congregation Anshe Emeth, 88 Main St., South River, will hold an “Erev Shavuot Dinner” June 12 at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $18 per adult or $36 per family, and reservations are due by June 8. Rotary’s dedication of peace pole June 15
The Rotary Club of South River-East Brunswick will hold a dedication ceremony June 15 at 11 a.m. to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rotary International. A peace pole with the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in 12 languages will be installed near the gazebo at the East Brunswick Township Municipal Complex (near the memorials). Mayor William P. Neary will be present for the dedication.
Artists guild to meet June 10 at E.B. library
The Suburban Artists Guild will meet June 10 at 2 p.m. at the East Brunswick Library, 1 Jean Walling Civic Center. Watercolorist Beverly Golembeski will give a demonstration. Golembeski has been a professional artist for 22 years and has won many state and national awards. Her memberships include the New Jersey Watercolor Society and Who’s Who in American Art.
Scout’s recruiting night, ice cream social June 10

‘The Butler Did It’ on tap at Playhouse 22

Deadline June 13 for art contest submissions The Middlesex County Department on Aging is accepting entries from residents age 60 and older for its senior citizen art contest, with registration deadline June 13.
