      S.R. rec offers trips to Yankee, Thunder games

      The South River Parks and Recreation Department is offering bus trips and tickets for the following baseball games:

      • July 15 — Trenton Thunder vs. Bowie Baysox;

      • July 29 — New York Yankees vs. Anaheim Angels;

      • Aug. 12 — New York Yankees vs. Texas Rangers;

      • Aug. 26 — Trenton Thunder vs. Binghamton Mets.

      The buses for Trenton Thunder games will leave at 5 p.m. from the South River High School parking lot, Montgomery Street. Departure for Yankee games will be at 4:15 p.m. from the parking lot.

      Yankee game trips cost $50 per person; Thunder trips, $15. Prices include game admission and bus fare. There will be a four-ticket per person limit for Yankee games.

      Tickets will be on sale for South River residents from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on June 22 at the entrance to the gym at South River High School. Nonresidents may purchase unsold tickets beginning on June 23 by calling the recreation office at (732) 254-4412.

      Public invited to view film on water quality

      The Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership will hold an open meeting for interested area residents and current members at 7:30 p.m. on June 21 at the South Brunswick Township Municipal Building, lower-level conference room, Monmouth Junction Road (Route 522), Monmouth Junction section of the township.

      “After The Storm,” a film co-produced by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Weather Channel, will be shown and discussed. The film depicts the need to protect the world’s water resources.

      Refreshments will be served.

      The Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the stewardship of the Lawrence Brook Watershed in East Brunswick, South Brunswick, North Brunswick, Milltown and New Brunswick.

      Monroe rec schedules Fourth of July gala

      The Monroe Township Recreation Department will sponsor its annual Fourth of July celebration starting at 5 p.m. on July 4 in Thompson Park, Monroe.

      The event will feature musical entertainment, refreshments, food and novelty vendors. A fireworks display is set for dusk. For more information, call the recreation office at (732) 723-5000.

      Temple will sponsor Voucher Book Fair

      Etz Chaim Monroe Township Jewish Center will sponsor a Voucher Book Fair from June 19-21 during regular hours at Barnes and Noble, Route 18 south, East Brunswick.

      When making a purchase, supporters should present a voucher at the register, and the sale will count toward the book fair total.

      The June 19 session will feature gift wrapping. In addition, Rabbi Ben Levy will sign his book “A Faithful Heart.”

      St. Stan’s Carnival slated for June 22-25

      St. Stan’s Carnival 2005 will take place from 6-11 p.m. June 22-25 on the St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish grounds, MacArthur Avenue and Main Street, Sayreville.

      Highlights will include rides for children and adults; games of chance; a “Las Vegas” wheel; nightly 50/50 drawings; a fresh seafood area; homemade foods; nightly entertainment; a beer garden; a barbecue pit; desserts; and a June 24 fish fry beginning at 5 p.m.

      The nightly lineup is as follows:

      June 22 — DJ Johnny B;

      June 23 — the music of Patrick and Joanna;

      June 24 — St. Stan’s Alumni Night, WMGQ-Radio remote, entertainment by Triple H Productions;

      June 25 — the McCarthy Brothers Band.

      Discounted ride tickets and advance 50/50 raffle tickets may be purchased at several locations according to the following schedule:

      • St. Stan’s School, MacArthur Avenue, 10 a.m. to noon on June 18;

      Sayreville Seafood and Deli, Washington Road, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 18 and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 19;

      Prior to Sunday-Afternoon Bingo at St. Stan’s Parish, noon to 1:30 p.m. on June 19;

      Prior to Tuesday-Night Bingo St. Stan’s Parish, 6-7:30 p.m. on June 21.

      Plays-in-the-Park sets summer musical season

      Middlesex County’s summer theater, Plays-in-the-Park, has set its 43rd season of musicals at the Stephen J. Capestro Theater in Roosevelt Park, Edison. The schedule is as follows:

      “Miss Saigon” — 8:30 p.m., June 28-July 9 (no performance July 4);

      “Aida” — 8:30 p.m., July 20-30;

      “Dreamgirls” — 8:30 p.m., Aug. 10-20.

      The box office will open at 5:30 p.m. on performance days. Patrons must bring a low-back lawn chair, which they may place in the outdoor seating area immediately after purchasing a ticket. Chaise lounges and chairs taller than 40 inches will not be allowed. There will be no performances on Sundays.

      Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors age 62 and above. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free of charge.

      The theater, which is handicapped accessible, is located off Route 1 south, just south of the Menlo Park shopping mall, Edison.

      Spotswood Library

      sponsoring book sale

      The Spotswood Public Library, 548 Main St., is hosting a book sale during regular library hours through June 25.

      Hardcover books, paperbacks, children’s books, audiocassettes and videocassettes will be available.

      Paperbacks will sell for 50 cents each or three for $1, hardcovers for 75 cents and up, videocassettes for $1.

      An “All-You-Can-Carry for $5” sale is set for the last two days of the event, June 24 and 25.

      All sales are final. Proceeds will benefit the library and its programs.

      Jamesburg youngsters

      invited to fishing derby

      The Jamesburg Knights of Columbus and Jamesburg Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local No. 166 will sponsor a fishing derby for Jamesburg youngsters ages 3-15, 9 a.m. to noon on June 26 at Molder’s Fish Reserve, Englishtown Road, Old Bridge.

      Interested individuals must sign up by June 20 at Jamesburg police headquarters, 131 Perrineville Road.

      Participants in the derby must be accompanied by an adult and should bring their own fishing poles. Bait will be provided. The event is open to Jamesburg residents only.

      Etz Chaim to sponsor

      June 26 Magic Show

      Etz Chaim/Monroe Township Jewish Center will present its annual Magic Show from 3-5 p.m. on June 26 at the Monroe Township Community Center, Monmouth Road.

      The event will feature clowns, magic and illusion, unicycle juggling and rolling globes.

      Tickets are free of charge for children ages 12 and under; youngsters must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is $5 for adults.

      Mental health panel

      sets June 18 garage sale

      NAMI-Middlesex, an affiliate of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, an organization for family and friends of the mentally ill, will hold its annual garage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 18 at 316 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick.

      Donations may be dropped off on the morning of June 17 at the garage sale site.

      ‘Picon Pie’ to be staged

      in Monroe on July 10

      The Monroe Township Arts Commission will sponsor two performances of “Picon Pie,” the musical tribute to legendary actress Molly Picon, at 3 and 7 p.m. on July 10 at the Richard P. Marasco Center for the Performing Arts at Monroe Township High School, Perrineville Road.

      “Picon Pie” is the musical biography of Yiddish actress Molly Picon. Known as “The Jewish Helen Hayes,” Picon helped keep Yiddish culture alive and was an integral part of mainstream American culture. She was elected to the Broadway Hall of Fame in 1981. The play offers a look inside the life and career of the actress against the backdrop of 20th-century Jewish history.

      Tony Award nominee June Gable will star as Molly Picon. Gable, who was last seen as Estelle, Joey’s chain-smoking agent on “Friends,” will co-star with Stuart Zagnit.

      Tickets cost $25 each and are available at the Monroe Township Senior Center, 1 Municipal Plaza; at the Monroe Township Community Center, 120 Monmouth Road; at www.piconpie.com/tours; and at the door on the day of the performance.

      Car wash will raise

      funds for marching unit

      The Sayreville War Memorial High School (SWMHS) Band Parents Association will sponsor a car wash from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on June 18 in the high school parking lot, Washington Road.

      Donation is $4 for cars and vans, $10 for conversion vans.

      All proceeds will benefit the SWMHS Marching Unit.

      South River Boy Scout Troop No. 4 will hold a car wash from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 18 at Elks Lodge No. 2033, Main Street, South River.

      St. Ambrose Carnival

      planned for June 21-25

      The St. Ambrose School Carnival will be held from 6-11 p.m. June 21-23, 6 p.m. to midnight on June 24, and 5-10 p.m. on June 25 on the school grounds, Throckmorton Lane, off Route 9, Old Bridge.

      The event will feature rides, games, various foods, entertainment, a super 50/50, nightly 50/50s and fireworks. Bracelet nights, when participants pay one price and go on rides all night, will be June 23 and 25. The fireworks display is set for 9 p.m. on June 24; rain date will be June 25.
