County continues free summer concert series

Historical panel seeks memorabilia for display The Jamesburg Historical Association is seeking memorabilia related to Forsgate Farm/Country Club and the New Jersey Training School for Boys (the New Jersey State Home for Boys), both Monroe, for two upcoming displays, “Forsgate Remembered” and “State Home Memories.” In an effort to present a wide array of items and memorabilia, the association is looking for anyone who may have a connection with either of the facilities and for memorabilia that could be donated or loaned for the duration of the displays. More specifically, postcards, photos, publications and literature from both facilities, milk bottles and crates from Forsgate Farms and memorabilia from Forsgate County Club, are sought. All donations are tax deductible. “Forsgate Remembered” will open Sept. 25 and run through Jan. 9. “State Home Memories” is planned for Feb. 12-May 28. Lakeview Mansion, 203 Buckelew Ave., Jamesburg, is open the second and fourth Sunday of each month from 2-4 p.m. Open-Mic Night to aid Milltown theater group Little Apple Productions, a nonprofit community theater company in Milltown, will host its first Open-Mic Night from 7-10 p.m. on July 29 at St. Paul’s Church, West Lakewood Street, Milltown. Adults and children are invited to come out and perform poetry, spoken word, drama, music, comedy, etc., or to just view the event. Sign-ups for performers will be on a first-come basis; performers must be present to sign up. Refreshments will be available, and prize raffles are scheduled. ADA march and rally planned for April 26 The Monday Morning Project of the New Jersey Council on Developmental Disabilities (NJCDD) will mark the 15th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by sponsoring an ADA: Forgotten at 15 march and rally beginning at 11 a.m. on July 26 at the Statehouse in Trenton. Brass, Brazilian bands to perform at concert The South River Cultural Arts and Heritage Commission will present Plug and Play — A Concert in the Park, featuring the music of the Navesink Brass Band, Trio de Minas and special guests to be announced, from 3-7 p.m. on July 23 at Szabo Gazebo, Dailey’s Pond Park, Prospect and William streets, South River. The Navesink Brass quintet performs a variety of music, including American, patriotic, popular, jazz, Broadway and classical. Trio de Minas is a Brazilian band. The concert is the second in a series of musical events designed to spotlight the local talent and diverse cultures of the South River area. Admission is free of charge. Business networking event set for July 28 Network PLUS, a business-to-business networking group that provides members with leads to help them grow their businesses, will sponsor its next networking event at 6 p.m. on July 28 at Panico’s, 103 Church St., New Brunswick. Spanish film next up at library film festival The annual Summer International Film Festival at the Monroe Township Library, 4 Municipal Plaza, will continue on July 28 with 2 and 6:30 p.m. screenings of the Spanish drama “Motorcycle Diaries.” The 2004 film, which is rated R, has a running time of 126 minutes. The movie tells the story of a young medical student and his older biochemist friend as they take an 8,000-mile road trip through South America. The student evolves from fun-loving youth to spiritual-minded zealot, and in the process becomes known as revolutionary Che Guevara. The remaining festival schedule is as follows: • Aug. 4 — “Kitchen Stories” (Swedish, 2003); • Aug. 11 — “Magdalene Sisters” (English, 2002). Be-Bop benefit car show rescheduled to July 23 The Be-Bop Cruisers 12th annual Benefit Car Show, originally slated for July 17, has been rescheduled to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 23 at Freehold Raceway, Route 9. The family-oriented event will feature more than 300 antique and classic cars from the tri-state area. The public is invited. Admission is free of charge. Playhouse 22, 210 Dunhams Corner Road, East Brunswick, will present its production of “Visiting Mr. Green” at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. on Sundays, July 23-Aug. 14. The play tells the story of Mr. Green, who lives alone in a cluttered apartment, having lost all interest in life. He is almost run down by Ross, a young executive who is ordered to do community service by visiting Mr. Green once a week. Over time, the contentious relationship between the two men gives way to mutual acceptance and support, as each discovers the other’s well-kept secret. National Night Out celebration set in E.B. The East Brunswick Police 2005 celebration of the 23rd annual National Night Out Against Crime is set for 6-9 p.m. on Aug. 2 in the parking lot at police headquarters, Jean Walling Civic Center. National Night Out, a nationwide event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, is designed to generate support for anticrime initiatives and to strengthen the relationship between police departments and the communities they serve. The East Brunswick event will include displays from every division and every specialized section within the police department. Some of the highlights will include a live scuba demonstration by the East Brunswick Police Water Rescue Team inside a large water tank. The Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) Unit will allow participants to experience the “fatal-vision goggles,” and the motorcycle unit will conduct a live demonstration of their intense training. Representatives from the New Jersey State Police Composite Drawing Unit and the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Detection Unit will also be on hand. All three East Brunswick fire companies and the Rescue Squad will display equipment. Firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) will be available to answer questions. Several Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups and other township organizations will attend. There will be free face painting, crafts and games. East Brunswick Police Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local No. 145 will sponsor two large rides, while the East Brunswick Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 98 will sponsor giveaways and free Italian ices. There will be free food and refreshments, a free children’s magic show and music provided by New Jersey 101.5 Radio. Sparky, the Somerset Patriots mascot, and Boomer, the Trenton Thunder mascot, will make special appearances. SWMHS Hall of Fame Award nominees sought The Sayreville War Memorial High School (SWMHS) Hall of Fame Committee is seeking nominations for its second annual Hall of Fame Awards. Any living SWMHS graduates who have made significant contributions to country, community, profession or organization are eligible. Members of the community are urged to submit letters of nomination or recommendation, based on the criteria, for the 2006 SWMHS Hall of Fame Award. Letters should summarize the nominee’s accomplishments and include the year of graduation, if known.
