The Central East Jersey Basketball Officials association (CEJBO) is holding a charity golf tournament, along with Have a Heart for Heather Non-Profit Organization, on Aug. 5 , starting at 8 a.m., at the Cream Ridge Golf Club. Cost to play is $110 per golfer. All proceeds will benefit Heather Hornecker, who was born in Sayreville, and resides there today with her family. At the age of 2, Heather was diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Arteries. The two main arteries of her heart (pulmonary and aorta) are not connected to their correct ventricle, which makes the oxygenated blood flow back into her lungs and the de-oxygenated blood flow back into her body. As an infant, Heather underwent open heart surgery, which opened the two chambers in her heart to restructure the abnormal circulation of blood flow. Unfortunately, in May 2004, Heather went into congenial heart failure, which categorized her as a possible candidate for a heart transplant. She was then registered for a heart transplant listing. On Dec. 1, 2004, Heather’s 22 years of struggling with this defect had finally come to an end, as the United Network for Organ Sharing found her a heart, and in the early morning of Dec. 2 she was operated on and is currently recovering from surgery. However, the medical costs are considerable and will continue to increase.
