For the second year in a row, the Jersey Sting U11 girls basketball team has won the AAU state championship, advancing them to the nationals. The Sting U11 girls are led by a very dedicated coaching staff, including Kevin Kresge (Holmdel), Tim Cooper (Colts Neck) and Carmine Spinella (Colts Neck). Both Kresge and Cooper have led teams in the past that won national titles. Once again, the state title came down to the very two same teams as last year — the Sting and the Central Jersey Hawks. The Hawks are well coached by Mary Beth Chambers and have a lot of depth. Their passing game is tremendous and their press is one of the toughest in the game to break. However, Kresge had the Sting girls well prepared for their opponent, and led by the efforts of Stacy Coyle (Monroe), who had 22 points (including five three-pointers), the Sting persevered. The Sting’s roster comprises Coyle, Ashley Cooper (Colts Neck), Amanda Spinella (Colts Neck), Jennifer Cecilone (Tinton Falls), Tara Patti (Tinton Falls), Sy’Essence Davis (Neptune), Shannon Nelson (Holmdel), Shannon McDermott (Holmdel), Heather Gurdon (Perrine-ville) and Victoria Lesko (Mahwah).
