The East Brunswick 11-year-old boy All-Stars won the Monroe Midsummer Tournament, beating the South Brunswick Vikings 5-3. The East Brunswick Cyclones finished their season on July 30, taking first place in the Monroe Tournament. In the fifth inning, the game was tied 3-3. Zack Lublin made some key defensive plays at second and Ryan Frye tripled in the fifth inning, driving in two runs to give the East Brunswick boys the lead. Mike Toto pitched the last three innings, holding the Vikings scoreless. The first-place finishes won by the boys in the Monroe and Montgomery tournaments were the result of the season’s leading hitters, Ryan Berdoff and Mike Toto, who each batted over 400, and Zack Lublin, Nick Gudzak and Ryan Frye. The success of the team was also led by the pitching of Justin Rosa, Mike Toto and Chris Wilczynski, and the fielding of Dom Razzano, Sam Horowitz, Phil Merola, Jimmy Wendell and Mike Cia. The manager was Gary Berdoff and coaches were Mike Toto, Tom Razzano and Dave Rosa.
The Goodwill Ambassadors are currently accepting applications for high school-age volleyball players in the USA and Canada to participate in the 2006 Goodwill Ambassadors Volleyball exchange to Europe. Members of this team will represent their country, community and the Goodwill Ambassadors’ teams in volleyball tournaments and local competitions in London, Paris, Venice and Rome. Sports for Youth Foundation Inc. is currently accepting applications for the Masters Age Volleyball Tour to Brazil. Division of play are: age 21-39 adult division; age 40-49 senior division; and age 50-plus masters division (program is open to both men and women). Players will take part in the Goodwill Ambassadors Volleyball Exchange, promoting friendship/peace through sport. This two-week program takes place from Dec. 9-20. The deadline for applications is Oct. 15, or when eight players per team (women/men) have been accepted into the year’s tour. The Spotswood Youth Baseball League will be holding a General Meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 8 p.m. at the Spotswood Municipal Building. The 2006 board elections will take place. There are currently two positions available — president and treasurer. The current board would also like to hear your concerns and let us know how the league is doing. In addition, the league is always looking for new volunteers to help with this growing organization.
The Monroe Township Soccer Club (MTSC) is now accepting registrations for the fall season. The season starts in mid-September. Registration forms can be filled out and dropped off at the Monroe Recreation Center, 120 Monmouth Road, Monroe.
The MSM Baseball League of New Jersey is currently forming and admitting new teams for the fall season. Individual players and/or teams 18-years-old and up of any skill are welcome. The league features five separate leagues of play, Internet stats and box scores for all games, and a 10-game season followed by playoffs. In addition, the all-star game is played in a pro baseball stadium. Season starts in early September. The 8U East Brunswick Extreme All-Star softball team finished its summer season with an incredible record of 21-2-1. The team batting average was an amazing .605 for the season, led by Gabrielle Kelliher, who hit .841. Andriana DiMaria, Siobhan Tracy, Lena Buccigrossi, Katherine McCulley, Morgan Lee, Marlena Bevilacqua, Meagan Costello, Kelsey McDonald, Jordyn Lustig, Kaitlyn Roughan and Gabrielle Sachs all contributed with batting averages over .500. Home run hitters included Marlena Bevilacqua, Meagan Costello, Kelsey McDonald, Gabrielle Kelliher, Jordyn Lustig and Kaitlyn Roughan. Marlena Bevilacqua’s speed on the bases and the outfield performances of Kylie Nemeth and Shelby Mikulak also helped the team. The Extreme, coached by Gary Kelliher, Steve Costello and Frank Roughan, won three first-place trophies in tournaments held in North Edison, Middletown and Hazlet, and a second-place trophy in the Sayreville tournament.
