      Watershed panel offers chemical-free products

      The Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership is conducting an Organic (Chemical-Free) Fertilizer and Cleaning Material Sale fund-raiser from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays at the group’s headquarters building, 85 Washington Ave., Milltown.

      The nonprofit organization, dedicated to the protection of the Lawrence Brook Watershed, seeks to encourage area residents to avoid the use of toxic garden materials and cleaning products. Data shows that contaminated stormwater runoff and chemical lawn fertilizers are significant contributors to elevated levels of chemicals in the drinking water supply. Order forms are available at local libraries, at the partnership’s Milltown headquarters, at www.lbwp.org, or by calling (732) 249-5297 (LBWP).

      Historic village fair scheduled for Sept. 24

      The 31st annual Village Street Fair, sponsored by the Historic Village of Old Bridge Community Group Inc., East Brunswick, will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 24 at the corner of Old Bridge Turnpike and Main Street, East Brunswick. Admission is free of charge. Proceeds from the event will support community projects in the historic village. The fair will feature antiques and collectibles, handcrafted items, historic displays, NASCAR collectibles, food and baked goods, children’s activities and a yard and garden accessories sale.

      Visitors are welcome to tour the Historic Village Community Garden, located at the corner of Old Bridge Turnpike and Kossman Street. The garden is the cooperative effort of village homeowners, the township of East Brunswick and local businesses. The East Brunswick Museum, located in the historic village, will be open for tours throughout the day. Space is still available for additional vendors and displays.       Story time registration set at Sp’wood Library

      In-person registration will begin on Sept. 12 for fall story times at the Spotswood Public Library, 548 Main St. Telephone and in-person registration will be accepted beginning Sept. 13.

      “Toddlers,” open to children 18-35 months accompanied by an adult, is set for 10:30-11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 1-1:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

      “Time To Read,” open to 3- and 4-year-olds (and 5-year-olds, if they are preschoolers), will be held from 1-1:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 10:30-11:15 a.m. on Thursdays.

      “Story Time” for ages 5-8 in kindergarten-third grade, is set for 3:30-4:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

      Programs, which are open to Spotswood Library card holders only, will feature stories, music, crafts and more. Sessions will run from Sept 27-Nov. 17.

      S.R. Office on Aging plans picnic, programs

      The South River Office on Aging will hold its annual Seniors Picnic from noon to 3 p.m. on Sept. 17 at the Polanka Picnic Grounds, 209 William St., South River.

      Admission is free of charge. Tickets for the event will be available on a first-come basis beginning Sept. 8.

      The Office on Aging also is accepting registration for residents who would like to participate in the following upcoming events: ballroom dance instruction, $10 per couple; Free Today’s Caregivers, a four-part series set for Thursdays in October; a visit to Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pa., Dec. 7, $70; and a trip to the Hunterdon Playhouse Holiday Show, Dec. 14, $48.

      Tuesday-Night Dinners to begin at Sons of Italy

      The Order of the Sons of Italy in America, Sgt. John Basilone Lodge, will begin its weekly Tuesday-Night Dinners at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 13 at the Imperial Music Center, 48 Appleby Ave., South River.

      Dinners, cooked fresh and featuring a different menu each week, will include homemade soup, salad, a main course, dessert, coffee and tea. Cost is $9.

      Monroe rec sponsoring sand-sculpting contest

      The Monroe Township Recreation Department will sponsor its seventh annual sand-sculpting contest through Sept. 10. The competition is open to township residents who create a sand sculpture during any trip to a beach or lake.

      Awards will be presented on Sept. 19 to winners in the following divisions: 5 years old and under; 6-12 years; teens; family team; adult singles.

      To enter, interested individuals should send a photo that includes themselves and their family/friends or team members with the sand sculpture to the Monroe Township Community Center, 120 Monmouth Road, Monroe Township NJ 08831, Attn.: Claire Juraska. Contestants’ names and telephone numbers should be written on the back of the photo.

      Luncheon and meeting

      next up for artists panel

      The Suburban Artists Guild will meet at 1 p.m. on Sept. 9 at the East Brunswick Library, Jean Walling Civic Center.

      The event will feature a welcome-back luncheon. Members are asked to bring a dish to share. A program titled “Palate to Palette” will offer a critique of artwork brought in by guild members.

      Dues are $30 and will be collected at the meeting.

      times on tap at library

      The South River Library, 55 Appleby Ave., will offer several upcoming story times and youth programs.

      “Toddler Time,” open to children 18 months-3 years, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, is set for 11 a.m. on Sept. 1 and 15.

      “Preschool Pals” for ages 3-5, will be offered at 4 p.m. on Sept. 1 and 15.

      Youngsters are invited to “Gerbils, Goldfish and Hamsters: Class Pets,” humorous tales of class-pet adventures and misadventures, set for 4 p.m. on Sept. 6 and 13.

      Free Kindermusik demonstrations will be offered on Sept. 15. The schedule is as follows: “Imagine That!” class, for youngsters ages 3-5, 10:15 a.m.; “Our Time” class, 18 months-3 years, 11 a.m.; “Village” class, birth to 18 months, 11:45 a.m. Advance registration is encouraged.

      “Rockin’ Readers,” an evening of guest readers and fun, will begin at 7 p.m. on Sept. 15.

      Public invited to special

      education PTA meeting

      SEPTA (Special Education PTA) of South River will hold a meeting from 6:30-9 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the South River Public Library, 55 Appleby Ave.

      The event is open to the public. Children are welcome to attend in the company of their parent or guardian.

      South River SEPTA extends an open invitation to all parents of special needs children who are transitioning from early intervention services (EIP) to preschool settings and those who are already in preschool settings to classification in their local school districts.

      Jazz panel to present award at meeting

      As part of its third anniversary celebration, the Central Jersey Jazz Association (CJJA) will nominate jazz musicians to its Hall of Jazz. Another category will be added to recognize business or educational efforts toward the jazz community.

      The first award will be given to Dan Morgenstern, director of the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies, Newark, for his lifelong efforts in the promotion of jazz. The presentation will take place at the CJJA meeting set for 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the North Brunswick government and community complex, 710 Hermann Road. Donation is $6.       Baby-sitter’s training to begin Sept. 7 in E.B.

      Boys and girls ages 12-18 are invited to attend a Baby-Sitter’s Training Course, certified by the American Red Cross, from 7-9:15 p.m. for four consecutive weeks beginning Sept. 7. The East Brunswick Division of Recreation will sponsor the event.

      Participants will use lifelike infant and child mannequins during the nine-session training program. Students will be taught to develop critical decision-making abilities and to provide basic care and first aid.

      Cost is $60 for East Brunswick residents, $75 for nonresidents. Fees are due at registration.

      Back-to-school, food contributions sought

      Monroe Chiropractic Care, 15 E. Railroad Ave., Jamesburg, is collecting back-to-school donations for local children in need.

      Requested items include pens, pencils, paper, erasers, rulers, etc. All contributions will be donated to area youngsters through their schools and the Jamesburg Presbyterian Church, 177 Gatzmer Ave.

      In addition, the Jamesburg Presbyterian Church Food Bank is in dire need of contributions.

      ‘Funny Females’ to feature Hoffman

      The Greenbriar at Whittingham adult community, Monroe, will present “Funny Females,” featuring Jackie Hoffman, at 8 p.m. on Sept. 24 at the Richard P. Marasco Performing Arts Center, Monroe Township High School, Perrineville Road.

      Hoffman originated three roles in the Broadway show “Hairspray.” Her solo off-Broadway show, “The Kvetching Continues,” won the Time-Out New York outstanding achievement award. She is a regular on the television show “Joey” and has appeared on “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

      Opening act will be comic Karen Bergreen, one of the final five contestants from the television show “Last Comic Standing.”
