      South River conducting hurricane relief drive

      The borough of South River is organizing a collection of goods for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. A tractor-trailer is expected to be provided to bring the supplies directly to the hurricane victims who need them.

      Several members of the community plan to accompany the truck, deliver the supplies and help out at food banks or wherever there is a need.

      All donations will be appreciated. Organizers are specifically seeking baby formula, diapers, wipes, Pedialyte; adult incontinence garments; sterile gloves; paper products including plates, cups, napkins, paper towels, toilet paper; office and media equipment; games and toys/sporting goods for children; nonperishable food; water; soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes/toothpaste; pet food; cash donations; boxes in which to pack supplies.

      Contributions may be dropped off through Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Borough Hall, Washington Street, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1451, Reid Street.

      Yard and sidewalk sale,

      cleanup slated in J’burg

      The Jamesburg Townwide Fall Yard and Sidewalk Sale, sponsored by the Jamesburg Area Chamber of Commerce, is set for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 24. The event will take place rain or shine.

      Street spaces between Harrison and Church streets will be available on a first-come basis. Cost is $10 per space. Town maps will be available at Mendoker’s Bakery, West Railroad Avenue.

      The borough’s annual Fall Home Cleanup is set for Sept. 28. Chemicals, concrete, car parts and construction materials will not be accepted.

      Sp’wood fire auxiliary will sponsor scramble

      The Spotswood Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will hold a scramble beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 at the Spotswood Fire Department, Main Street. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

      Admission is $5. Space is limited; adults only will be admitted.

      Coffee and cake will be served. Other refreshments will be available for purchase.

      Walkers, sponsors sought for Crop Walk

      South River will host a Crop Walk from 2-4 p.m. on Sept. 25. Participants may register at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 90 Leonardine Ave. The walk will proceed to various churches throughout the borough.

      Proceeds will go to the Church World Service and to the South River Food Bank.

      Dinner will honor retiring crossing guard

      Joan Dallas, a Milltown Schools crossing guard who will be retiring this year, will be honored at a retirement dinner set for Oct. 18 at the Cambridge Inn, Spotswood.

      Dallas has been a crossing guard for many years. She was appointed under the administration of John Johnson, a former Milltown chief of police who died in 1981. For more information and to reserve, call Helena Marko at (732) 846-9751.

      Monroe Country Fair scheduled for Sept. 18

      The 17th annual Monroe Township Country Fair is set for noon to 6 p.m. on Sept. 18 at Thompson Park, Perrineville Road, Monroe.

      The event is sponsored by the Monroe Township Mother’s Club and the Monroe Township Recreation Department. Rain date is Sept. 25.

      The fair will feature all-day entertainment; the Monroe Township Police Department Honor Guard; food; games for children; crafts; a petting zoo; pumpkin painting; pony rides; the Little Miss Monroe, Town Squire and Baby Buggy contests; a 50/50 raffle; a karate demonstration; a car show; a horse-and-wagon ride; a wonder whale, pirate bounce and slide; fireworks at dusk; and more.

      Mayor Richard Pucci will officially open the event at 1 p.m.

      Admission is free of charge. Pets will not be allowed.

      Public invited to free health fair on Sept. 17

      The Filipino-American Community of Old Bridge Inc. will sponsor a free health fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 17 in the gym at St. Ambrose School, Throckmorton Lane, Old Bridge.

      The following free services will be provided: health screenings including adult and pediatric general screenings, body fat analysis, lung capacity testing, blood typing, blood sugar testing, blood pressure and breast cancer screening; physical therapy screenings including posture, muscle strength testing and hand-grip testing; and dental screenings for children and adults.

      Also featured will be education and information on topics such as cancer, diabetes, nutrition and meal planning; a CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) demonstration; and information on women’s issues including prenatal counseling, fitness and wellness.

      The public is invited. All are welcome. Registration is not required.

      The health fair is a community service provided by the Filipino-American Community of Old Bridge Inc., in cooperation with St. Ambrose Church; Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge and Perth Amboy; and Colgate-Palmolive Co.

      plans Spaghetti Supper

      St. James Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Assembly will hold a Spaghetti Supper from 5-8 p.m. on Sept. 23 at the knights council home, 83 Lincoln Ave., Jamesburg. Cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children under age 12.

      Milltown Lions Club

      to host spaghetti dinner

      The Milltown Lions Club will sponsor a spaghetti dinner from 5-8 p.m. on Sept. 23 at the Milltown Senior Citizens Center, Violet Terrace.

      Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, $2 for children. The event will feature a cash bar. Wine, beer and soft drinks will be available.

      Circus to raise funds for

      Hemophilia Association

      Phills Brothers will host a Sunshine Magic Circus fund-raiser to benefit the Hemophilia Association of New Jersey at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 23 at East Brunswick High School, Cranbury Road.

      Two children will be admitted free of charge with one paid adult. Tickets for adults cost $5 each and will be available at the door.

      E.B. cultural festival

      scheduled for Sept. 25

      East Brunswick’s annual Our Community Is Fair cultural festival, a celebration of the township’s ethnic diversity, will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Sept. 25 at the East Brunswick municipal pond, Ryders Lane. Rain date is Oct. 2.

      The daylong event will feature continuous cultural entertainment, a free craft project for children, free face painting, an ethnic food court, craft vendors, cultural exhibits and more.

      Limited space remains for craft vendors and exhibitors.

      Our Community Is Fair is sponsored by the Township of East Brunswick Division of Recreation and the East Brunswick Human Relations Council.

      Pride in Milltown Day

      scheduled for Oct. 1

      The eighth annual Pride in Milltown Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 1 in Borough Park, JFK Boulevard and Violet Terrace, next to the community pool. Rain date is Oct. 2.

      The event, sponsored by the Milltown Revitalization Committee, is designed to promote community spirit and awareness of local businesses and service organizations.

      This year’s highlights will include:

      The Party Dolls in concert at 1 p.m.;

      a magic and illusion show with George Reiger Jr., noon;

      WCTC/WMGQ Radio prize van;

      all-day food court;

      Community Pride Fair — nonprofit community groups serving Milltown are invited to promote their activities, free of charge, at an information table;

      Business Expo — local businesses serving Milltown will promote their products and services (exhibitor’s fee is $25);

      Arts and Crafts Fair — area vendors will display and sell their creations (exhibitor’s fee is $10);

      • Classic Car Show — juried competition with prizes, trophies and giveaways to entrants ($10 registration in advance, $15 on day of event);

      The Sayrebrook Pet Adoption Center will hold its fourth annual No-Fleas Market and Craft Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 18 in the shelter parking lot, 1400 Main St., Sayreville.

      The event will feature treasures for humans and pets, face-painting and crafts for children, “while-you-wait” minigrooming for canines, homemade food and goodies, door prizes and raffles. All proceeds will benefit the animal shelter.

      Fernicola to speak at Monroe Dems meeting

      The Monroe Township Democratic Club will hold a meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 20 at Monroe Township High School, Perrineville Road.

      Guest speaker Camille Fernicola, Middlesex County freeholder, will offer a presentation on open space.

      Monroe arts panel to present Toxic Audio

      The award-winning group Toxic Audio will appear for one performance, 2 p.m. on Oct. 16, at the Richard P. Marasco Center for the Performing Arts, Monroe Township High School, Perrineville Road. The event is sponsored by the Monroe Township Cultural Arts Commission.

      Toxic Audio presents a vocal-comedy improvisational theatrical experience featuring five vocalists and no instruments. Families are invited to view the show and sing and dance in their seats.

      The 90-minute theatrical “dialogueless” show combines original skits, quirky musical numbers, improv and backflips, in a style often compared to the productions of Stomp and Blue Man Group.

      In 1998 Toxic Audio launched its show in an abandoned storefront at the Orlando International Fringe Festival. The players caught the attention of Walt Disney Co. executives who hired them as featured performers at Walt Disney World’s MGM Studios, Orlando.

      The group has made national television appearances with Ed McMahon and Wayne Brady and performed a reggae-style weather report on ESPN2’s morning show “Cold Pizza.” Toxic Audio won the 2004 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience for its off-Broadway show at the John Houseman Theatre, New York City.

      Tickets for the Monroe show cost $20 for the general public, $18 for patrons; students will be admitted free of charge. Advance tickets will be available at the Monroe Township Senior Center, 1 Municipal Plaza; at the Monroe Township Community Center, 120 Monmouth Road; and at the door just prior to the performance.

      Golf outing will benefit families of firefighters

      Brothers Helping Brothers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families of New Jersey firefighters killed or disabled in the line of duty, will hold a fund-raising golf outing on Oct. 10 at the Concordia Golf Club, Monroe.

      Tee-off and shotgun start are set for 7:45 a.m. The event will include a continental breakfast, hamburgers and hot dogs on the turn, a buffet lunch and an awards ceremony.

      The outing will feature a hole-in-one challenge for an automobile, a 50/50 raffle, and prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive and more.

      Collared shirts are a must. Jeans are not permitted.

      Donation is $125 per player, $450 for a foursome. Hole sponsorships are available at $200 each. All proceeds will go directly to the families of the fallen heroes.

      Brothers Helping Brothers was founded after the attack on the World Trade Center, New York City, to raise money for the families of rescue workers killed while responding to the terrorist attacks. The fund has become permanent and has helped the families of seven New Jersey firefighters lost in the line of duty.

      Concert to feature local talent, karaoke event

      The South River Cultural Arts and Heritage Commission will present Plug and Play — A Concert in the Park, featuring the music of Electrical Void, Happy Trees, Nukeclear Winter and Jovanna Rivera, from 2-5 p.m. on Sept. 17 at Szabo Gazebo, Dailey’s Pond Park, Prospect and William streets, South River. Interested individuals are invited to bring their own music for an open-mike karaoke event.

      Concertgoers are asked to contribute nonperishable items for Hurricane Katrina relief.

      The concert is the fourth in a series of musical events designed to spotlight the local talent and diverse cultures of the South River area. Admission is free of charge. Concertgoers should bring blankets or lawn chairs. Refreshments will be available for purchase.       Milltown GOP to host

      antiques appraisal event

      The Milltown Republican Party will hold an antiques appraisal event from 1-5 p.m. on Sept. 24 at the Milltown Senior Citizens Center, 60 Violet Terrace.

      Items will be professionally appraised by Bodnar Auction Sales, New Brunswick. All appraisals are verbal and nonbinding opinions of value. The event will include a 1 p.m. lecture by Bodnar, during which he will discuss today’s antiques and collectibles market, what’s selling and what’s popular.

      A limited number of tickets are available. Each ticket purchased will entitle the bearer to have one antique or collectible item appraised at $8 per item. Ticket holders may bring as many guests as they would like to the event. All appraisals will be conducted in the order in which the ticket holders arrive at the event.       Schools to conduct drive

      for Katrina relief fund

      Spotswood Schools will sponsor a collection to benefit the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. Donations may be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 17 in the parking lot behind Spotswood High School, Summerhill Road.

      Historical panel seeks

      memorabilia for display

      The Jamesburg Historical Association is seeking memorabilia related to Forsgate Farm/Country Club and the New Jersey Training School for Boys (the New Jersey State Home for Boys), both Monroe, for two upcoming displays, “Forsgate Remembered” and “State Home Memories.”

      In an effort to present a wide array of items and memorabilia, the association is looking for anyone who may have a connection with either of the facilities and for memorabilia that could be donated or loaned for the duration of the displays. More specifically, postcards, photos, publications and literature from both facilities, milk bottles and crates from Forsgate Farms and memorabilia from Forsgate County Club, are sought. All donations are tax deductible.

      “Forsgate Remembered” will open Sept. 25 and run through Jan. 9. “State Home Memories” is planned for Feb. 12-May 28.

      Relief Skate to aid

      hurricane victims

      Roller Magic, South Amboy Arena, will hold a Relief Skate to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 at the roller rink, North Stevens Avenue and Sixth Street.

      Purchases at bookstore will benefit Beth Ohr

      Congregation Beth Ohr, Old Bridge, will hold a fall fund-raiser from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sept. 25 at Barnes and Noble, Route 18, East Brunswick, outside the Brunswick Square Mall.

      Car wash proceeds to aid EBHS volleyball team

      The East Brunswick High School (EBHS) girls volleyball team will sponsor a car wash from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 17 at Central School, Cranbury Road (opposite the high school), East Brunswick.

      Cost is $5 for cars, $7 for vans and sport-utility vehicles.
