On Saturday the Monroe Falcons 13U boys baseball team improved its record to 4-0 with an impressive 9-2 victory over the Lacey Lightning. Shawn Weeks, Nick Dini, Jimmy Small and Alex Vizcaino combined to pitch a two-hitter, striking out a total of 15 batters. Shawn Weeks started and earned the win, striking out five of the eight batters he faced. The fielding was excellent. Alex Vizcaino gunned down a runner attempting to steal third; Nick Dini jumped out of the box to field a bunt and throw a runner out at first; and Peter Mehr made two fine plays at second base. The boys pounded 12 hits to raise the team’s batting average to .385. Jimmy Small went 3-for-4 with a long double to right center. Alex Vizcaino, who leads the team in hitting with a .727 batting average, scored twice and had two RBIs. Peter Mehr went 2-for-3 and raised his batting average to .500. Mike Walp (batting .438) had a key line drive single to left to drive in a run early in the game. Kenny Langfeld went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Chris Russo scored, and Sal Filiano executed a beautiful sacrifice bunt on a bunt-and-run play. The boys got a special thrill when former major league pitching star Willie Banks stopped by to cheer them on and provide some playing tips.

The Monroe Phoenix U10 boys soccer team stayed undefeated for the season by beating the Aberdeen/Matawan Cosmos, 4-3. Brian Sullivan led the scoring with two goals, while Michael Mischler and Richie Toth chipped in with a goal apiece. Jeremy Roth had two assists and set up many scoring chances throughout the day. Matthew Anderson, Chris Germano, Corey Klaskin, John Cosenza and Russell Clayton kept the pressure up on offense while Michael Mischler, Nicholas Scardilli, and Christian Corbisiero played a very aggressive game at midfield. Richie Toth played another great game at defense while Tyler Utheim got the win at goalie with some solid play.

This past Sunday, the Phoenix U10 made it four-for-four with a 9-0 victory over the Plainfield Galaxy. Leading the way with four goals and a tremendous performance was No. 4, Jeremy Roth.

Also joining in on the scoring was Tyler Utheim with two goals, and Matthew Anderson, Richie Toth, and Brian Sullivan with a goal a piece. There were great offensive performances by John Cosenza, Chris Germano, and Christian Corbisiero, who dribbled and passed well the entire game. Nick Scardilli played an outstanding game on both offense and defense, as did Shawn Reynolds and Corey Klaskin. Once again, Michael Mischler was the backbone of the team at halfback, controlling the game on all sides of the ball. Russell Clayton and Tyler Utheim were outstanding in goal for a fourth straight game, stopping every shot that came their way. They have only given up four goals in four games so far this season. When not in goal, Russell and Tyler played extremely well on offense. The Phoenix try to make it five-for-five this Sunday in Piscataway.
