      E.B. Road Races planned for Oct. 23

      The 28th annual East Brunswick Road Races, featuring the running of the Kids Pumpkin Dashes, the John Ragone 5K Race, the East Brunswick 10K Race and the 1-Mile Fun Run/Fitness Walk, is set for Oct. 23 at Crystal Springs Family Aquatic Center, Dunhams Corner Road, East Brunswick. Race-day registration will begin at 11 a.m.

      The day is sponsored by the East Brunswick Department of Recreation and Community Services and the Raritan Valley Road Runners.

      This year’s event will raise funds for Camp Daisy, an organization that provides education through recreation for approximately 160 children and young people with disabilities.

      Kids Dashes are set to start at noon. All participating youngsters will receive a ribbon and a free pumpkin to decorate.

      The 1-Mile Fun Run/Fitness Walk will begin at 12:20 p.m. All finishers will receive a medal.

      The 5K and 10K races will go off at 1:05 p.m. and 1:20 p.m., respectively. Every preregistered 5K and 10K runner will receive a free T-shirt and goodie bag. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male finishers, female finishers, East Brunswick finishers and age group winners.

      The 5K and 10K races count for 500 points for USA Track and Field members.

      All proceeds will be donated to community service organizations.

      ‘So, You Want a Dog’ on tap at O.B. Library

      Felicia Monteforte, training director of MVP Complete Dog Center, Monmouth County, will discuss adding a canine companion to the family during “So, You Want a Dog” set for 2 p.m. on Oct. 23 at the Old Bridge Public Library Main Branch, Route 516 and Cottrell Road.

      OBHS band to host Oct. 29 competition

      Old Bridge High School Marching Knights Band will host its annual Home Show Tournament of Bands on Oct. 29 at Lombardi Field, Old Bridge High School, Route 516. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m.

      The event will feature music, food, sweets, gifts, prizes and more. Approximately 10 bands will perform.

      Tickets cost $6 for adults, $4 for students and senior citizens.

      Middletown environmental cleanup set for Oct. 23

      The Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership will sponsor a Milltown townwide cleanup from 1-4 p.m. on Oct. 23.

      Interested volunteers should meet at 12:45 p.m. in the Milltown Borough Hall parking lot, Washington Avenue.

      Refreshments will be provided.

      Fall foliage hike set for Oct. 23 at Cheesequake

      Authors to appear at Buckelew mansion

      Members of Sisters in Crime-Central Jersey will sign and discuss their short stories that appear in the 2005 mystery anthology, “Crime Scene New Jersey: Mysteries by Garden State Authors,” from 2-5 p.m. on Oct. 23 at Lakeview, the historic Buckelew mansion, 203 Buckelew Ave., Jamesburg.

      Lakeview is featured in the anthology’s “Mayhem at Buckelew House” by Nancy Quatrano. The short story features a ghostly cast, the disappearance of the “Lincoln” coach and the power of life.

      The public is invited to tour the mansion and meet anthology authors J.J. Dumont, Alicia Butcher Erhardt, Michelle Giles, Pat Marinelli, Chelle Martin, Barbara Nuzzo, Adele Polomski, Nancy Quatrano, Rebecca Russell and Elaine Togneri.

      Each mystery is set in a different New Jersey historical location. The anthology, published by Clued In Press, costs $10.

      The Jamesburg Historical Association will receive a donation for each book sold during the authors’ visit.

      Lakeview, once the home of James Buckelew, for whom the town is named, serves as a living museum.

      The facility is open to the public for tours from 2-4 p.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. Special events during the year include “Haunted Lakeview,” the President’s Day celebration and Christmas at Lakeview, a Victorian holiday celebration.

      There is no admission fee, but donations are appreciated.

      Junior auxiliary slates Oct. 27 open meeting

      The Old Bridge Junior Auxiliary of Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division, will hold an open meeting from 6-7:30 p.m. on Oct. 27 in Auxiliary Hall at the hospital’s Old Bridge division, off Ferry Road, between routes 9 and 18.

      Two-day yard sale

      will benefit convent

      Sacred Heart Convent, 226 Walnut St., South Amboy, will hold an Autumn House Yard Sale from 3:30-7:30 p.m. on Oct. 28 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 29.

      Available merchandise will include religious articles, books, furniture and gift items. All proceeds will go toward convent repairs.

      St. Thomas Card Party scheduled for Nov. 10

      St. Thomas the Apostle HSA will sponsor a Card Party fund-raiser beginning at 8 p.m. on Nov. 10 in the school auditorium, Route 18 south, Old Bridge. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m.

      The St. Bartholomew Columbiettes will sponsor a Nov. 12 bus trip to the Lancaster, Pa., shopping outlets.

      ‘Simpatico’ auditions scheduled for Nov. 6, 7

      Band collecting used inkjet, laser cartridges

      The Spotswood High School Band is collecting used inkjet and laser computer cartridges as part of a fund-raising program.

      Drop-off boxes are located at all Spotswood schools; the Spotswood Public Library, the Spotswood Post Office and Kearny Bank, all Main Street; and KrisKell Creations Hair Salon, Summerhill Road.

      Proceeds will benefit the band. The fund-raiser will be ongoing throughout the year.

      Howl-O-Ween event coming to pet shelter

      Sayreville Pet Adoption Center, 1400 Main St., will host a Howl-O-Ween Open House from noon to 3 p.m. on Oct. 30.

      at American Legion hall

      Spotswood American Legion Post No. 253 will sponsor its monthly Oldies Dance from 8-11 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the post home, Devoe Avenue, next to the lake.

      Participants will dance to the music of the ’50s and ’60s. An oldies dance is held every third Friday of the month at the post home. A DJ provides the music.

      The Spotswood Public Library, 548 Main St., will celebrate Children’s Book Week, Nov. 14-20, with an event titled “My Favorite Book.”

      Youngsters ages 3-13 will be asked to tell about their favorite book in words or pictures. All participants will receive a gift certificate for a free dessert at Applebee’s restaurant.

      Parade/costume contest scheduled in Monroe

      The Monroe Township Mother’s Club and the Monroe Township Recreation Department will hold their annual Halloween Parade and Costume Contest beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 29 at the Monroe Township Community Center, Monmouth Road. The event will take place rain or shine.

      Lineup and registration are set for 10:30 a.m. Judging will take place at 10:45 a.m. Entrants after 10:45 a.m. will not be judged but are welcome to participate in the parade and to partake of refreshments. The parade is set for 11 a.m.

      Divisions for the costume competition are: baby buggy (youngsters in carriages and strollers); toddlers (walkers up to 2 years old); preschool (3- and 4-year-olds); kindergarten; first and second grades; third and fourth grades; fifth grade and up; floats; and all other wheels.

      New this year will be the awarding of 10 best-costume trophies per division. Costumes may be pretty, funny, scary, represent an animal or a character or be totally original.

      First-, second- and third-place winners will be named in the float competition. A best-in-parade costume trophy also will be awarded.
