Monroe Township’s U11 boys travel basketball team opened its season with a victory over Marlboro, 37-27. Monroe’s front line of Ryan Germano (two assists) and Dan Brix (five rebounds) combined for 20 points, while shooting 10-of-13 from the floor. Victor Sorrento (four assists, three steals), Ryan Genevieve (four steals), Tyler Cushman (three assists), Chris Tagliaferro (one steal) and Ahmid Williams (one steal) combined for 17 points. Other game contributors included Chris Viani, Chris Laino, Brian Nale, Peter Gullick, and Anthony Battaglia, as they helped created 11 defensive steals and forced Marlboro into 11 turnovers.

The team then outscored Old Bridge 23-5 in the third quarter as Ryan Genevieve and Danny Brix exploded for a combined 21-point performance in the quarter. Their offensive surge helped lead Monroe to a 53-27 victory. Victor Sorrento (one assist), Genevieve (three rebounds) and Brix (seven rebounds, five assists, three steals) combined for a 40-point offensive performance. Other game contributors included Tyler Cushman, Ryan Germano, Ahmid Williams, Chris Viani, Brian Nale, Peter Gulick, Chris Tagliaferro and Anthony Battaglia as they collectively tallied 13 points, six assists, and 10 rebounds.

The winning streak continues for the Monroe Phoenix U10 boys soccer team as they beat the Piscataway Crew 7-0. Leading the way with a hat trick was Christian Corbisiero, who played a fantastic game. Tyler Utheim, John Cosenza, Matthew Anderson and Richie Toth each had a goal apiece. Richie Toth has now scored a goal in each of the three games since moving up to offense from defense. Once again, Jeremy Roth played a stellar right wing with four assists. Chris Germano used his blazing speed to be all over the field helping the offense and defense. Nick Scardilli, Brian Sullivan, Shawn Reynolds, Russell Clayton and Corey Klaskin also contributed well on both sides of the ball. Corey had his best game this season with some very aggressive play that helped create many opportunities for the team. Once again, Michael Mischler did it all for the Phoenix with tremendous midfield play. His long throw-ins, goal kicks and corner kicks have proved to be invaluable. For the second game in a row, Russell Clayton and Tyler Utheim shared the shutout, letting nothing get past them. The Phoenix try to make it six-for-six this coming Sunday at home against the Westfield Atlas.

Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham women’s soccer goalie Melissa Braun, of Sayreville, was named the Freedom Conference Women’s Soccer Goalie/Defender of the Week for the second time. Braun shut out the No. 16 Wilkes Colonels as FDU upset Wilkes on the road 2-0. It marked just the second loss of the year for the Colonels and it was their first conference loss of the year. Braun made three saves for the shutout, her sixth of the year.

The Golden Bear Chargers Pee Wees finished 8-0 with their 26-6 victory over Millstone on Sunday. The 2004 State Champions are 23-0 over the last two years. In the first quarter, quarterback Dean Vitale connected with Mark Kukoda and Sean Hudson before finding Tyler Mataya with a 13-yard strike. Kukoda converted the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Vitale ran the second one in from seven yards out. He hit Jake Krantz over the middle for the second extra point. Then, running back Garret Walters scampered 55 yards for the next score.

“If Garret gets the blocking and is able to get going, we’re tough to beat,” said head coach Dean Vitale, who finished with his sixth undefeated season and is 55-1 overall.

GBC then turned to Garret Cuddy, who pounded the ball down to the 12, before David Lyons had a nifty run of his own to extend the lead. The GBC offense produced a franchise-high 213 points (27 ppg). Max Cartelli, James Wittkop, Jeremy Baum and Blake Fredricks sparked the GBC defense. GBC will next host Carteret/Paterson Saturday at East Brunswick High School at 5:30 p.m.
