Monroe Township’s U11 travel basketball team improved its record to 4-0 with victories over TYBA (48-17) and Milltown (39-28). Peter Gulick (14 points, five rebounds) picked up his team after Monroe’s starting frontline was decimated by an injury and foul trouble. Eight other players found their way into the scoring column: Tyler Cushman (two rebounds, two points); Ryan Genevieve (three steals, six points), Victor Sorrento (five rebounds, six points), Danny Brix (five assists, eight points), Ryan Germano (three assists, four points), Ahmid Williams (two steals, two points), Chris Viani (one assist, four points) and Anthony Battaglia (three rebounds, two points), while Chris Tagliaferro, Chris Laino and Brian Nale helped anchor the defense with four steals. Monroe hosted Milltown in a nonconference game at Continental Airline Arena prior to the Nets’ preseason game against the 76ers. Ryan Genevieve (eight rebounds) and Danny Brix (five steals) combined for an NBA-like 27-point, 15-rebound performance against Milltown, while other game contributors included Germano, Cushman, Sorrento, Williams, Viani, Laino, Nale, Gulick, Tagliaferro, and Battaglia as they combined for 17 points, 21 rebounds and six assists. The Monroe Township’s U11 Boys Travel Basketball Team remained undefeated (6-0) after collecting victories over Freehold (37-22) and Manalapan (53-44). Ryan Genevieve (two steals) and Ryan Germano (12 rebounds) combined for 19 points, while Tyler Cushman (two steals), Victor Sorrento (four steals), Danny Brix (seven assists), Ahmid Williams (three assists), Chris Viani (two assists), Chris Laino (two steals), Brian Nale (three rebounds), Peter Gulick (two rebounds), Chris Tagliaferro (two steals) and Anthony Battaglia (two rebounds) combined for 18 points, 16 assists, and 12 steals. Against a pesky Manalapan team Brix (five steals) and Germano (four rebounds) combined for a 35-point performance, while Genevieve (four assists), Sorrento (three steals), Williams, Cushman, Viani (three rebounds), Nale, Gulick, Battaglia and Tagliaferro combined for an 18-point, 14-rebound performance.
The Player’s Choice Camp will be running a high intensity pro workout for high school girls basketball players on Sunday, Nov. 13, at Kean University in Union from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The workout will be run by Tom Sclafani. South River Little League registration for new and returning players will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the high school music room (across from the gym). Children from 9 to 12 years old (as of April 30, 2006) are eligible. Cost is $65 for one child and $110 for more than one. Parents should bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate and proof of residency. Children should also be present so uniform sizes can be taken. The U8 Monroe Dragons lost their first game of the weekend to Linden Thunder. Even though it was a tough loss, the Dragons played their best game of the season as they really came together as a team. The goalies, Erin Seppi and Brian Senkus, did an outstanding job against a very tough team. The Dragons played an incredible game, led by strong play from Kassidy Utheim, Ryan Craver and Michael Lazzaro. The defense was anchored by Zac Hroch, Eric Evans and Tyler Sosnak. The U8 Dragons continued their strong play on Sunday as the tied Montgomery Meteors, 1-1. They played with extreme ball control, which led to many scoring opportunities. Ryan Craver scored the lone goal with a great passing combination from Michael Lazzaro and Erin Seppi. Tyler Panassidi and Zac “The Flash” Hroch were all over the field mixing it up on both offense and defense. The defense was led by Eric Evans strong play. Goalies Tyler Sosnak and Kassidy Ultheim did an awesome job protecting the goal.
The East Brunswick Baseball League JV girls softball team concluded the fall season by winning both games of a double-header on Sunday in Union, and finished the fall campaign with a 7-5 record. East Brunswick defeated the Hillsborough Hustle JV team, 3-0. Maggie McSpadden, 4-0, struck out 10 batters and scattered four hits. The shutout victory was made possible by the outstanding defensive play of third baseman Jessie Hartland, shortstop Courtney Sachs and center fielder Carrie Wan. East Brunswick defeated the Union JV softball team, 6-2, behind the dominant pitching of Samantha Ur. Ur struck out 14 batters and allowed only three hits. Catcher Kristen Fiumecaldo threw out three would-be base stealers. Ur, Liz Sobol, and Katie Pfister each collected run-producing singles. Maggie McSpadden led East Brunswick in hitting with a .450 batting average with Kristen Fiumecalo batting a solid .300.
Sign-ups for the newly formed East Brunswick Youth Ice Hockey Club are under way for its winter program. Membership is open to East Brunswick children, ages four to 13, for the programs that run from Nov. 19 to March 4. All team practices and games will be held on Saturdays and Sundays at the Princeton Sports Center, 1000 Cornwall Road, Monmouth Junction. All equipment and skates will be provided for the “Learn-to-Play” hockey program for beginners during Saturday morning sessions. The East Brunswick Youth Ice Hockey Club is part of the newly formed Central Jersey Town Hockey League. The league was established to provide youth with the opportunity to play recreational hockey. Town clubs will compete against each other. Other towns participating in the Central Jersey Town Hockey League include: North Brunswick, South Brunswick, Hillsboro, Montgomery, South River, Woodbridge, Manalapan, West Windsor/Plainsboro, Robbinsville and Hamilton. The New Jersey Interscholastic Lacrosse Officials Association will be holding cadet classes throughout the state for individuals interested in officiating high school boys lacrosse.
