The word for the U10 Monroe Phoenix Boys soccer team has been “tie.” On Oct. 23, the Phoenix tied the Westfield Atlas, 1-1, with an awesome goal by Nicholas Scardilli to preserve the tie. On Saturday, at the North Brunswick Spookarama Tournament, the Phoenix fought for a 0-0 tie with the East Brunswick Hurricanes and a 1-1 tie with the North Brunswick Flash. Matthew Anderson put home the lone goal for the Phoenix. On Sunday, the Phoenix tied Metuchen, 3-3, with Jeremy Roth scoring the first two goals with a great offensive performance and Chris Germano banging home the tying goal. In all games, the Phoenix played very well and were led on offense by Christian Corbisiero, Matthew Anderson, Jeremy Roth, Chris Germano, and John Cosenza. The team had a number of players who played extremely well on both sides of the ball. They were Brian Sullivan, Nicholas Scardilli, Richie Toth, Corey Klaskin, and Shawn Reynolds. Holding down the midfield duties with terrific all-around games was Michael Mischler. Tyler Utheim and Russell Clayton shared the goaltending duties with four solid games. They were also big contributors on both offense and defense. The Phoenix try to stay unbeaten this weekend with two games against Piscataway and Aberdeen-Matawan. The Monroe Phoenix U10 boys soccer team took two steps closer to an undefeated season with two big wins this past weekend. On Saturday, the Phoenix beat the Piscataway Crew, 4-0. Christopher Germano had a tremendous all-around game and led the way with two goals. Matthew Anderson banged home a 20-yarder in the second quarter with his best shot of the season. The goal of the game, and maybe the goal of the year, came in the second half when Michael Mischler kicked a perfect corner kick in front of the goal and Brian Sullivan knocked a header right into the net. On Sunday, the Phoenix held on for a 3-2 victory over the Aberdeen/Matawan Cosmos. John Cosenza took a beautiful pass from Matthew Anderson and put it into the back of the net for the first goal with Brian Sullivan notching his second goal of the weekend in the second quarter. Jeremy Roth put in the game winner late in the second half with an amazing shot from the right corner that sailed over the goalie’s head. Also leading the way on both offense and defense this weekend was Nicholas Scardilli, Christian Corbisiero, Corey Klaskin and Richie Toth. Tyler Utheim and Russell Clayton once again had stellar games in goal, only giving up a goal apiece over two games. They were also big contributors out on the field. The Phoenix play their final regular season game and go for an undefeated season in Plainfield this Sunday.
