The Monroe Falcons 13U baseball team remains undefeated at 8-0. The Falcons defeated the East Brunswick All Stars, 8-3. The highlight of the game was a triple play. Jimmy Small caught a line drive at the mound, threw to Mike Walp at third, who fired a strike to Peter Mehr at second. The Falcons next defeated Marlboro, 11-1. The game highlight was a triple by Kenny Langfeld (.333) on a shot that hit the big field fence on a bounce. The Falcons then beat North Howell in the first round of the playoffs, 11-6. The game highlight was Alex Vizcaino’s bases-loaded triple to center in the second inning. Nick Dini earned the win, allowing only one run in four innings pitched while striking out seven. In the semifinals, the Falcons beat Marlboro, 5-3. Chris Russo (.300) had two clutch hits and drove in the winning run. Sal Filiano (.300) had two bunt singles and a sacrifice bunt. Shawn Weeks tripled to left center and drove in a run. Jimmy Small earned the win, pitching five solid innings. The team’s hitting leaders are Alex Vizcaino (.688), Mike Walp (.384), Shawn Weeks (.375), Peter Mehr (.375) and Jimmy Small (.370). The pitching leaders are Alex Vizcaino, Jimmy Small, Shawn Weeks and Nick Dini. Excellent defense had been provided by Mike Scarrone at catcher and shortstop, and Matt Lederman in the outfield. The team plays the Waretown National next in the USOTB division finals.
Monroe Township’s U11 boys travel basketball team knocked off Spring Lake (56-46) and Millstone (54-18) to extend its winning streak to eight games. Against Spring Lake, Ryan Genevieve (four rebounds) and Danny Brix (10 rebounds, seven assists, four steals) led the way with a combined 30-point performance. Ahmid Williams, Victor Sorrento (six rebounds), Ryan Germano (seven rebounds, three assists) chipped in 26 points, while Tyler Cushman, Brian Nale, Peter Gulick, Chris Tagliaferro and Anthony Battaglia combined for five rebounds and two assists. Against Millstone, Germano (seven rebounds), Genevieve and Brix combined for 35 points and 15 rebounds. Other game contributors included Cushman, Sorrento, Williams, Chris Viani, Nale, Gulick (six rebounds), Tagliaferro and Battaglia (eight points, five rebounds) as they collectively poured in 19 points and had 25 rebounds.
The Monroe Phoenix U10 boys soccer team rose to the task this weekend and completed an undefeated fall season with a convincing 9-0 victory over the Plainfield Galaxy. The team put forth a tremendous all-around effort: there were eight different scorers for the nine goals. John Cosenza led the way with two goals. The other goals were scored by Chris Germano, Corey Klaskin, Shawn Reynolds, Michael Mischler, Brian Sullivan, Matthew Anderson and Jeremy Roth. Christian Corbisiero, Nicholas Scardilli and Richie Toth had great all-around games on both sides of the ball, while Tyler Utheim and Russell Clayton played stellar games in goal, notching their fifth shutout in 10 games. The pair only gave up 10 goals in 10 games while the offense tallied 45 goals. The final record was 8-0-2 and 12-0-4 including tournaments. Next up for the Phoenix is the winter indoor season at Mercer County College.
The following are the results of the Tamarack Women’s Nine-Hole Golf Association’s Oct. 20 outing — kickers, no flights, choose own handicap to come as close as possible to par. Marge Widder took first with a 35, followed by Ann Marie Broehl (33), Cathy Batista (39) and Joyce Nicolaison (40). Doris Colgrove, Broehl and Widder all had fewest putts with 18.
Senior Derek Swanner, a Monroe resident who graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in Middletown, was named to the First Team All-Freedom Conference after a solid season as a member of the Drew University men’s soccer team. Swanner, who currently ranks fourth at Drew for goals in a career, was the Rangers’ leading scorer for the third consecutive season This season, Swanner has connected on 10 goals and five assists, good for 25 points. He ranks fourth in the conference in points, and first in shot percentage, scoring on 10-of-34 shots.
The College at Florham (Fairleigh Dickinson) Devils field hockey team saw junior Katie Daly, of South River, named to the First Team All-Freedom Conference Team. Daly had a solid season for the Devils. Daly had two games where she scored multiple goals for the Devils. This year, she ranks third in goals with six and third in points with 18. Daly led the Devils with six assists on the year. With the six assists, it places Daly third in career assists with 11. This is Daly’s second time making All-Freedom Conference team, after making it in 2004.
