The New Jersey Federation of Baseball Umpires will hold a clinic on the following dates for membership in the NJSFBU: Feb. 23 and 28, and March 2, 7, 9, 14, 16, 21 and 23, with a March 28 exam. Spotswood Youth Baseball League is holding its final spring registration on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Spotswood Municipal Building. All children accepted from age 5-16 as of April 30, 2006. Bring a photocopy of child’s birth certificate. Anyone wishing to manage or coach should also bring a photocopy of their Rutgers Safety Certification Card. Background checks will also be performed on all managers and coaches. There is a $10 fee for the background check. Registration fees are $65. Work bonds are also collected at sign-up. There will be no late registration accepted. Senior League players who make the school team will get a full refund, if they do not want to play in both leagues. South River Little League final registration for new and returning players for the 2006 season will be held on Thursday, Feb. 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the high school music room (across from the gym). Children from 9 to 12 years old (as of April 30, 2006) are eligible. Cost is $65 for one child and $110 for more than one. Parents should bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate and proof of residency. Children should also be present so uniform sizes can be taken. Registration for Old Bridge’s Cheesequake Baseball and Softball League will be held Saturday and on Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cheesequake Baseball/Softball fields, Schulmeister Road (off Route 9 north), Old Bridge. Girls and boys born between May 1, 1999, and April 30, 2001, are eligible to play in the clinic division (fee $60); for girls softball (fee $85) they must be born between Jan. 1, 1988, and Dec. 31, 1999; and to play baseball (fee $85) the child must be born between May 1, 1986, and April 30, 1999. Family rate ($135) is available for two or more children playing. The league has one raffle fundraiser, which is paid at the time of registration $30 (one child); $60 (two or more children). Have two checks available — one for registration/raffle fee and the other for the work bond ($150). Work bond check is only cashed if no work is contributed. The Monroe seventh-grade travel basketball team remained unbeaten in Central Jersey league action with a 59-27 win in Monroe over Edison on Saturday. Monroe’s offense was led by Mike Mahmoud and Nick Dini, who combined for 28 points including six three-pointers. Matt Gorham and Alex Vizcaino combined for 21 points, 18 rebounds, two blocked shots and four assists. Kashaun Stroughn and Mike Walp anchored the middle with tough defense and combined for 10 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots. Jimmy Small and Woo-Joo Han harassed Edison into allowing five turnovers, and combined for four steals, six rebounds and three assists. Thomas Applegate and Kyle Mike contributed four rebounds, two assists and a steal to the Monroe cause. Monroe is 7-and O and in first place in Central Jersey. Monroe took its high powered offense on the road for a Mid-Monmouth clash with Holmdel on Sunday. After falling behind early, Monroe fought back and cruised to a 48-39 victory. Monroe was led by Matt Gorham and Nick Dini, who combined for 24 points. Mahmoud, Stroughn and Vizcaino totaled 24 points as well. Small, Walp, Han, Mike and Thomas Applegate all made contributions to the team effort. Monroe is now in first place in Mid-Monmouth action with a 7-1 record.
Monroe Township’s U11 boys travel basketball team registered two more victories this weekend with wins over East Brunswick (51-42) and Edison (36-32). Monroe remains in a first place tie with Merrill Park in Central Jersey Basketball League’s 12U Red Division. Point guards Tyler Cushman and Ahmid William controlled the games’ tempo as they registered only four turnovers with eight assists while running the team’s offense to perfection all weekend. Ryan Genevieve (six rebounds, six steals) and Danny Brix (12 rebounds, nine steals, one charge) combined for 57 points over the two-game campaign; while Cushman (four steals), Williams (eight rebounds, five steals), Victor Sorrento (12 rebound, six steals), Ryan Germano (11 rebounds), Brian Nale (two rebounds), Peter Gulick (two rebounds), Chris Tagliaferro (three rebounds) and Anthony Battaglia (two rebounds) combined for 32 points. The two victories improved the team’s overall record to 24-4 and sets the stage for a clash of two undefeated divisional teams as Monroe meets Merrill Park this weekend.
