      Milltown rec offers trips to theater, sports events

      The Milltown Department of Recreation will offer three upcoming events. All trips are open to residents and nonresidents.

      A trip to see the 7 p.m. Harlem Globetrotters game at Madison Square Garden, New York City, is set for Feb. 17. Cost is $45 per ticket, including bus transportation.

      The rec office is offering a bus trip to the 7:30 p.m. March 3 New York Knicks vs. Chicago Bulls basketball game at Madison Square Garden, New York City. Cost is $69 per ticket and includes bus transportation.

      Tickets are available for the 4 p.m. March 19 performance of “Willy Wonka” at the State Theatre, New Brunswick. Cost is $25 per ticket.

      Parents invited to

      problem-solving events

      The East Brunswick Public Schools Student Assistance Program will present problem-solving workshops for parents beginning at 7 p.m. on four upcoming Wednesdays in the cafetorium at Churchill Junior High School, Norton Lane. Refreshments will be served. Childcare will be available.

      The schedule is as follows:

      • Feb. 8 — “Internet Safety: Do You Know What Is Happening Online?” featuring Timothy Nestor, supervisory special agent, Cybercrime Squad, FBI;

      • Feb. 15 — “Self-Esteem and Substance Abuse: Keeping Our Children Healthy,” with Kurt Kubinsky, director of adolescent services, Extra Care Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center;

      • Feb. 22 — “Helping Children Deal With Grief: A Discussion for Parents,” presented by Amy Jacobs, coordinator, Middlesex County Traumatic Loss Coalition;

      • March 1 — “Roundtable Discussion: You Have the Questions, We Have the Answers,” featuring a panel of elementary and secondary school student-assistance specialists; an open discussion on topics such as test-anxiety, discipline, student skills, peer relations, etc.

      tickets to Devils game

      The Sayreville War Memorial High School Band Parents Association is selling discounted tickets to the New Jersey Devils vs. Tampa Bay Lightning hockey game set for Feb. 7 at the Continental Airlines Arena, East Rutherford.

      Cost is $30 (box office price: $52) for second-level seating. A limited number of tickets are available. Proceeds will benefit the marching band.

      OLV Columbiettes

      to honor past president

      Our Lady of Victory (OLV) Knights of Columbus Council No. 2061 Columbiettes will honor most recent Past President Gail Olszewski at a dinner-dance beginning at 7 p.m. on Feb. 18 at the Knights of Columbus Victorian Hall, Washington Road, Parlin section of Sayreville. The event will feature a cocktail hour, dinner, open bar and dancing to music of the ’50s and ’60s with DJ Gary “Motown” Morton. Tickets cost $20 per person.       Milltown Masonic Lodge No. 294, 30 N. Main St. (upstairs from the Bergens Mills Cafe), will host its 22nd annual All-You-Can-Eat Country Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 12.       Monroe to host Garden State Symphonic Band

      The Monroe Township Patrons of the Arts will present the Garden State Symphonic Band in concert at 2 p.m. on Feb. 26 at the Richard P. Marasco Center for the Performing Arts, Monroe Township High School, Perrineville Road. Snow date is March 5.

      The band is a fully professional musical ensemble modeled after the Sousa Band of the early 20th century. Its primary goal is to maintain the American tradition of professional concert bands as a viable artistic medium aimed at presenting uplifting performances that are entertaining to the general public.

      Although its name has changed several times over the years, the Garden State Symphonic Band traces its history back to 1907 when it first emerged as the Goodwill Fife and Drum Corps. In 1967 the group adopted the name under which it operates today.

      Concert tickets, which are $12 per person for the general public, $10 for patrons, free of charge for students, are available in advance at the Monroe Township Senior Center, 1 Municipal Plaza, at the Monroe Township Community Center, 120 Monmouth Road, and at the box office prior to the performance.

      The program has been made possible in part by the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

      Organizations sought for Community Day

      The township of East Brunswick Division of Recreation and Community Services will sponsor the 17th annual East Brunswick Community Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 5 at Brunswick Square Mall, Route 18, East Brunswick.

      Community-based, nonprofit volunteer groups are invited to participate in the free event. Exhibitors will display materials, recruit members, distribute literature and demonstrate their talents.

      Reserved exhibit space is free to the first 58 groups to respond.

      Kindergarten signups set for Monroe Schools

      Monroe Township Public Schools will hold kindergarten registration on March 1 and 2, 7 and 8. Parents should bring their child’s original birth certificate, proof of complete immunizations and proof of residency.

      Registration for Barclay Brook area residents will be held on March 1 and 2 at Barclay Brook School, 358 Buckelew Ave. Individuals whose last names begin with the letters A-G will register from 9:15-11:45 a.m. on March 1; last names H-M will sign up from 12:30-2:30 p.m. on the same day.       Knights, Columbiettes to hold Mardi Gras gala

      St. Bartholomew Knights of Columbus and Columbiettes, East Brunswick, will sponsor a Mardi Gras Party from 6:30-10:30 p.m. on Feb. 18 in the parish hall, Ryders Lane, East Brunswick.

      The event will feature music and dancing, an all-you-can-eat dinner, beer, wine and soda.

      ‘42nd Street’ auditions on tap in Old Bridge

      Auditions for the upcoming GB Productions presentation of “42nd Street” will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Feb. 13 and 14 at St. Thomas the Apostle School auditorium, Route 18 south, Old Bridge.

      Metabolism, nutrition to be topics at lecture

      The Wellness Education Center, East Brunswick, will sponsor a free health lecture titled “The Scientific Breakthrough for Balanced Nutrition and Health” at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 8 at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center.       Library Lovers contest

      February is Library Lovers Month at the Spotswood Public Library, 548 Main St.

      Family Movie Night

      Asset-building program for youngsters

      The Monroe Municipal Alliance Committee will present “Count-on-Me Kids,” a six-week developmental asset-building program for first- and second-graders, set for 4:15-5 p.m. on Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28, March 7 and 14 at the Monroe Township Community Center, 120 Monmouth Road.

      The free program will focus on raising children’s self-concept, communications skills and responsibility level.

      Tickets available for Alzheimer’s benefit

      A semiformal dinner-dance to benefit Alzheimer’s disease research is planned for 7 p.m. on March 3 at the East Brunswick Chateau, Cranbury Road. The event will be hosted by Danielle Micale of Milltown, who was named Mrs. Middlesex County 2006.

      Cost is $80 per person. A cash bar will be provided throughout the evening. Seating is limited. Net proceeds will support the Alzheimer’s Association.
