Police stop yields drug charges

EAST BRUNSWICK — A Middlesex County man received drug and warrant charges after police found him driving erratically Monday, and his passenger was also arrested.

Patrolman Don Carruth observed 48-year-old Raymond J. Sawicz, of South Amboy, nearly back his red Nissan into several parked cars in the Loehmann’s Plaza parking lot around 5:47 p.m., according to police. Sawicz drove off the lot and onto Route 18 southbound, then turned onto the Edgeboro Road jughandle. The officer noticed that the vehicle was straddling the middle lane markings of the jughandle, and the driver then made an abrupt change into the left lane, police said.

After the officer pulled the vehicle over into the Hess gas station on Route 18 northbound, he found that the driver, Sawicz, did not possess any identification. Police said Carruth then observed a cigarette pack that had a purple glass vial sticking out of the top. When the officer retrieved the cigarette pack, he discovered three glass vials, two containing suspected cocaine and one with crack cocaine, according to police. Also in the pack was a glass pipe that police believe was used for smoking crack cocaine.

Police later found that Sawicz was wanted on an outstanding contempt of court warrant out of Sayreville for $2,500. His passenger, 43-year-old Jacqueline E. Loprete-Zeyen, of Sayreville, was found to have two outstanding warrants for her arrest out of Sayreville and Newark, totaling $1,250. She was arrested and turned over to the Sayreville Police Department.

Sawicz was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license, and operating a motor vehicle with a controlled dangerous substance in his possession. After processing, he was turned over to Sayreville police on the outstanding warrant.
