Civil War 'veterans'

to attend church service

Civil War re-enactors will lead all in attendance into the 10 a.m. March 19 service at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Main Street, Spotswood, to celebrate the Eucharist in the style of 1876.

Re-enactors from the 14th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Company, dressed in authentic Union Army uniforms, will lead the congregation into the church from the front gate. The "veterans," who are members of the New Jersey Civil War History Association, will remain in the building throughout the service and conduct a living history on the church grounds following the Eucharist.

The Rev. Charles Lochner and several members of the congregation will be costumed in the dress of the time. Prayers of thanksgiving will be offered in Elizabethan vernacular for the centennial celebration of the birth of the United States. The language, common in Episcopal church services until just a few decades ago, also will be used in the liturgy from 1876.

The patenting of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell will be among the blessings counted. Congregants will pray for the well-being for their president, Ulysses S. Grant, and for their governor, Joseph D. Bedle, a Democrat.

The service is another event in the yearlong celebration of the 250th anniversary of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.
