The Princeton Youth Hockey Association (PYHA) will hold tryouts for the 2006 travel season. The season starts around Sept. 1, and registration is open to players whose birth years are between 1988 and 2001. Tryouts will be held April 6 and 11 at the historic Baker Rink on the Princeton University Campus. They offer first-rate coaches and a competitive program that focuses on player development while promoting team-building skills. Monroe's U11 boys travel basketball team advanced to the championship game for the Central Jersey League's 12U Red Division with a victory over Branchburg (51-34). Ryan Genevieve (three steals), Ryan Germano (three steals) and Danny Brix (seven rebounds, six assists) rallied their team with a 40-point performance. Tyler Cushman (two rebounds), Victor Sorrento (one rebound), Ahmid Williams (five rebounds), Brian Nale (one rebound), Peter Gulick (one rebound), Chris Tagliaferro (three rebounds) and Anthony Battaglia (three rebounds) combined for an 11-point performance. Monroe improved their season record to 33-4 and extended their season-high winning streak to 15 games.

A men's adult basketball league at South River High School is looking for teams and/or players. The league features five-on-five play, with six teams playing an eight-game season plus playoffs. There are two certified referees and a scorekeeper. Game jerseys included (up to 10 team shirts). High school game rules. The executive board of the Tamarack Women's Nine-Hole Golf Association invites female golfers from Middlesex County and the surrounding counties to join members in playing a friendly, competitive round of golf on Thursday mornings from April 1 through Nov. 1. Golfers should have a knowledge of the rules of the game and be capable of playing the round in a timely fashion. Flights will be established depending on level of competency. Prizes are awarded for the weekly competitions and trophies are awarded at the closing luncheon in November to winners of tournaments.

The guest speaker will be Tony Wilcenski, PGA professional and director of the Monroe Township Recreation Department. His topic will be "Techniques to Lower Your Golf Score." Competitive play begins April 6.

The Monroe Recreation Golf League, for residents, guests and high school students, will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, starting April 4 at Clearbrook Golf Club. The first tee time is 4 p.m. Registration fee is $10, with $15 greens fee payable at the course. You must register at the Community Center. Monroe Township's inaugural lacrosse season is under way. Girls and boys teams for children in grades 2-8 will practice every Saturday 2:30-4:30 p.m. and every Sunday 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Ryan Football Field on North State Home Road in Monroe. Old Bridge Parks and Recreation will hold a Volunteer Youth Coaches Certification Class. The class meets all state requirements and will be held March 29 at the Old Bridge Civic Center. Spotswood Youth Baseball League is looking for umpires (ages 13-18) for the 2006 Minor League Season. Participants must be dependable, responsible, baseball knowledgeable and attend the mandatory umpire clinic on March 18 (9:30 a.m. to noon) at Spotswood High School.
