Activities offered at Monroe Senior Center

"Deciphering Health Information: Understanding Cancer-Screening Recommendations" is planned for 1:30 p.m. on March 27. Rachel Behrendt, R.N., Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, will offer advice on making sense of the latest screening information available. Advance registration is requested.

The Princeton Health Care System Diabetes Program will offer diabetes screenings, by appointment only, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 31. Cholesterol, blood-glucose, foot and eye screenings will be available. In addition, Howard Goldstein, M.D., will present a talk titled "What's New in Diabetes Treatment" at 10 a.m. All appointments should be made by calling the diabetes program at (609) 497-4372. The senior center will not accept screening appointments.

Seniors are invited to a "Microsoft Excel for Beginners" four-day workshop set for March 28, April 4, 11 and 18. Participants must be computer literate. Fee is $25. Register by calling Eileen at the center.

A talk titled "Healthy Travel" is set for 11:30 a.m. on April 3. Aldo Damiani, M.D., of Saint Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick, will discuss how to stay healthy while traveling abroad and domestically. Advance registration is requested.

A DVD celebrating Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday will be shown at 1 p.m. on April 3. The DVD will feature Broadway performers singing Webber tunes at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Highlights will include performances from "Sunset Boulevard," "Cats," "Evita" and more. Advance registration is requested.

Open enrollment for Lori Morell's "Body Works," a cardiovascular and strength-training workout, will begin in April at the center. Tuesday classes will start at 9:30 a.m. on April 4; Thursday classes start at 11:30 a.m. on April 6. Cost is $20 for 20 classes. Payment is due by March 28. Space is limited. Saint Peter's University Hospital Community Mobile Health will provide free osteoporosis screenings, by appointment only, from 1-3 p.m. on April 4 at the center. An ultrasound of the ankle bone will measure mineral bone density to indicate bone health. Appointments are limited. Call the center for availability.

A Parkinson's disease support group meets at 1 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month at the center.

Holocaust observance

scheduled for May 7

The Henry Ricklis Holocaust Memorial Committee will hold its annual Yom HaShoa commemorative program at 1:30 p.m. on May 7 at Monroe Township High School, Perrineville Road.

This year's theme will be "Beyond the Holocaust: The Remaking of Lives." Through the voices of "Adopt-a-Survivor" students, four Holocaust survivors will share stories of how they remade their lives after the liberation and coming to the United States.

There also will be a display of student art and poetry depicting the students' reaction to Holocaust education. Other highlights will include music and dramatic readings by second-generation survivors. Two menorahs will be lit, one by survivors and one in honor of survivors.

A Yahrzeit candle-lighting ceremony for survivors and their families will begin at 1:30 p.m. Candles will be available at 1 p.m.

Pro-wrestling event to benefit rec program

Former World Wrestling Entertainment stars Kamala and The Patriot and local stars Archadia, Nicky Oceans and Bryan Sexton will headline a fund-raising evening of all-star professional wrestling set for 7:45 p.m. on March 24 at South River Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1451, 31 Reid St.

A portion of the evening's proceeds will go to Sayreville Recreation Wrestling to aid the program's year-end banquet and awards ceremony.

Due to zoning regulations, organizers moved the event to the VFW location from its original planned location, the Garden Friends Theater, Bordentown Avenue, Old Bridge. Tickets printed with the Garden Friends location will be honored at the VFW site.

Local wrestlers Ed Kazzar, Dave Logan and J.T. Highlander also will be on the card.

Meeting includes budget hearing, presentation

The Spotswood Board of Education will present and adopt the proposed 2006-07 school budget March 28 at 7 p.m. in the Appleby School gymnasium. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the Spotswood PTA's regular meeting.

Immediately following the budget vote will be a presentation by Spotswood Police Sgt. Chris Bierman and Patrolman Ed Shapley entitled, "Community Awareness Suspicious Activities." Panel offering organic,

biodegradable products

The Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership is conducting an Organic Fertilizer and Biodegradable Cleaning Products Sale fundraiser from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays at the group's headquarters building, 85 Washington Ave., Milltown.

The nonprofit organization, dedicated to the protection of the Lawrence Brook Watershed, seeks to encourage area residents and businesses to avoid the use of toxic garden materials and cleaning products. Data shows that contaminated stormwater runoff and chemical lawn fertilizers are significant contributors to elevated levels of chemicals in the area's drinking-water supply.

The panel serves the environmental interests of East Brunswick, Milltown, South Brunswick, North Brunswick and New Brunswick.

St. Jude's Miracle Mile

set for April 2 at EBHS

A St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Miracle Mile walkathon is set for 10 a.m. on April 2 at East Brunswick High School, Cranbury Road. Registration will begin at 9:45 a.m.

The event is sponsored by Jacqueline Gerson, Megan Liberty, Ashnoo Nanavati and Hillary Rosen, all juniors at EBHS, in conjunction with the school's Peer Mediation Club.

Snacks will be provided. There will be music to entertain all walkers.

Pledge forms may be picked up at the EBHS office, or participants may create their own list of sponsors. Contributions may be made as flat donations or on a per-lap basis. There will be prizes for all walkers; the exact item will be dependent upon the amount of money raised by an individual or a family.

Proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. The hospital, which treats patients from across the United States and from more than 60 foreign countries, cares for children with genetic immune defects and pediatric AIDS. St. Jude's also researches new drugs and therapies to fight infection.

Prize structure changes

Bingo by the Bay at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Perth Amboy Community Center, Sadowski Parkway and Wisteria Street, is held every Thursday beginning at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Craft Show, Food Sale

Vendors are sought for the annual First Presbyterian Church of South Amboy Spring Craft Show and Food Sale set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 13 in the church basement, 150 N. Broadway, South Amboy.

Partners in Excellence

event set for March 25

The East Brunswick Education Foundation (EBEF) will host its annual Partner in Excellence Dinner beginning at 7:30 p.m. on March 25 at the East Brunswick Hilton, Route 18.

The evening's honorees will be Paul Schoen, who has been an active member of the EBEF's board of trustees since 1996 and serves as the panel's treasurer, and Provident Bank and University Radiology Group, both East Brunswick.

Cost is $100 per person. Proceeds will support programs that enhance and enrich the curriculum in East Brunswick public schools.

pet shelter garage sale

Sayreville Pet Adoption Center, 1400 Main St., will hold a Giant Garage Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 26 in the shelter's parking lot.

Donations of items for the sale will be accepted at the shelter from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 23, 24 and 25. Clothing, linens and shoes will not be accepted.

Irwin Tricky Tray planned for March 31

Irwin Elementary School PTA will hold a Tricky Tray beginning at 6 p.m. on March 31 in the cafetorium at Churchill Junior High School, Norton Road, East Brunswick.

Prizes will include three overnight getaways; a Play Station portable; hopper passes for Walt Disney World, Orlando, Fla.; and gift certificates to many local restaurants, spas, theaters and more; autographed sports memorabilia; and tickets to sporting events.

Admission is $7 in advance, $9 at the door, and includes one sheet of tickets.

Free cancer screenings,

education set at hospital

Raritan Bay Medical Center's Jacqueline M. and Robert N. Wilentz Cancer Center will sponsor a free Cancer Screening, Education and Awareness Day from 9 a.m. to noon on March 25 in Auxiliary Hall, lower level of the Medical Arts Building, adjacent to the hospital's Old Bridge division, off Ferry Road, between routes 9 and 18.

Qualified professionals will offer three different screenings - breast, skin and prostate. There will be educational sessions and a program offering information on community cancer and health resources. Take-home colorectal screening kits will be distributed. Art auction to benefit

I.C. Prekindergarten

Immaculate Conception Prekindergarten will host an Art Auction fundraiser beginning at 8 p.m. on April 1 at the school, Manalapan Road, Spotswood. A preview with wine, cheese, coffee and dessert will start at 7 p.m.

The live auction, hosted by Ross Galleries, will feature fine arts, sports memorabilia, music memorabilia and more. Opening bids will be up to 50 percent less than traditional art gallery prices. County 4-H teen council

schedules clothing drive

The Middlesex County 4-H Teen Council will hold a clothing drive from 7:30-9 p.m. on Sept. 10 and 17 at the 4-H Center, corner of Cranbury and Fern roads, East Brunswick.

The council is seeking old and used clothes, shoes, handbags, stuffed animals and household linens including blankets, sheets, towels and curtains. Donations should be packed in sturdy plastic trash bags.

Proceeds from the drive will be used to support the third annual Project GIFT, a holiday shopping event for families with limited resources.

Nominees sought for

recreation/parks award

The Township of East Brunswick Recreation and Parks Advisory Board is now accepting nominations for the 2006 Friends of Recreation and Parks Award.

Created to recognize the efforts of individuals, organizations and corporations who have assisted the township's recreation and parks programs, the award is presented annually as part of the July Is Recreation and Parks Month campaign.

Individuals must be residents of East Brunswick and must have established a record of rendering outstanding services as a volunteer supportive of recreation and parks in the community. Organizations or corporations may or may not be located in East Brunswick but must have benefited East Brunswick in recreation, parks and community services endeavors.

Criteria and nomination forms may be picked up at the Division of Recreation, 350 Dunhams Corner Road, East Brunswick, and at the mayor's office, Jean Walling Civic Center. Deadline for submission of nominations is April 3.

Antique appraisal event coming to E.B. Library

Tickets will go on sale on March 30 at the East Brunswick Public Library circulation desk for What's It Worth?, an afternoon of antique and collectible appraisals and information, set for 1:15-5 p.m. on April 30 at the library, Jean Walling Civic Center. The event is sponsored by the East Brunswick Friends of The Library. Tickets are limited to the first 100 buyers.

Admission is $5 and includes two appraisals, a lecture, resource guides and refreshments. Weapons will not be accepted for appraisal. Parking is free of charge.

Appraisals will be conducted in numerical order of the tickets sold. Each ticket holder may have two items professionally appraised by Joseph Bodnar of Bodnar Auction Sales, New Brunswick, and his associates. All appraisals are verbal, nonbinding opinions of value. The event will include a 1:30 p.m. lecture by Bodnar, during which he will discuss today's antiques and collectibles market, what's selling and what's not, the impact of the Internet, estate sales, getting the best price for an item, and how to get the best value for the dollar when buying.

Related library reference materials will be on display all afternoon. A handout bibliography of books, magazines, specialty guides and Internet sites dealing with antiques and collectibles also will be available. Light refreshments will be served at no extra charge.
