Save Darfur, Central New Jersey Chapter, will screen a DVD titled "A 21st-Century Genocide" at 7 p.m. on April 5 at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center.
The 30-minute DVD tells the story of the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan, Africa, and highlights the efforts of individuals throughout the United States who have committed their lives to ending the genocide. Participants will learn how to raise their voices in the cause.
A Save Darfur: Rally to Stop Genocide will be held on April 30 in Washington, D.C.

Older adults sought for anxiety research study
Adults age 60 or above who are often worried and have noticed an increase in anxiety and tension in the past few months are invited to the Rutgers Mood Management Class, offered as part of a research study on anxiety at Rutgers University, New Brunswick.
The program will teach participants how to make slight changes to thoughts and behaviors in order to obtain better control over moods and less negative emotion in daily life. The goal of the study is to discover if the class is as effective for older adults as it has been for young and middle-aged adults.
Eligible participants will receive eight individual sessions, free of charge, and also will be paid up to $100. The study does not involve drugs or medications.
The research team is looking for adults who are at least 60 years old; have experienced frequent, difficult-to-control worrying for the past few months; have had trouble sleeping and making decisions; have been exhibiting increased irritability, muscle tension, feelings of restlessness or the feeling of their mind "going suddenly blank"; are able to read, speak and write in English; and are able to attend eight sessions over the next few months and complete an MRI scan.

Holocaust observance scheduled for May 7
The Henry Ricklis Holocaust Memorial Committee will hold its annual Yom HaShoa commemorative program at 1:30 p.m. on May 7 at Monroe Township High School, Perrineville Road.
This year's theme will be "Beyond the Holocaust: The Remaking of Lives." Through the voices of "Adopt-a-Survivor" students, four Holocaust survivors will share stories of how they remade their lives after the liberation and coming to the United States.
There also will be a display of student art and poetry depicting the students' reaction to Holocaust education. Other highlights will include music and dramatic readings by second-generation survivors. Two menorahs will be lit, one by survivors and one in honor of survivors.
A Yahrzeit candle-lighting ceremony for survivors and their families will begin at 1:30 p.m. Candles will be available at 1 p.m.
Admission is free of charge. The public is welcome.

Lenten play coming to Sacred Heart Church
The Xavier Company will present "No Greater Love," a Lenten production depicting the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in poetry, song and dance, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on April 7 at Sacred Heart Church, Washington Avenue, South Amboy.
Actor Brad Thomson, who has appeared on television programs including "Law and Order," "Third Watch" and "The Sopranos," will be featured in the role of Jesus. Mary will be portrayed by Laura Cable, a graduate of New York University Tisch School of the Arts, New York City, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London.
The Xavier Company is a group of performing artists in residence at St. Francis Xavier Church, New York City. Founded in 1982, the group is made up of professionally trained actors, singers and dancers who perform original works focused on the themes of faith and social justice.
Admission to the performance is free of charge; however, free-will donations will be accepted to support the works of the Xavier Company.

4-H Teen Council
to hold Clothing Drive
The Middlesex County 4-H Teen Council will hold its annual Clothing Drive from 7-9 p.m. on April 3 and 5 at the 4-H Center, corner of Cranbury and Fern roads, East Brunswick.
The council is seeking used clothes, shoes, handbags and linens. Donations should be packed in sturdy plastic trash bags.
Proceeds from the drive will be used to support the fourth annual Project GIFT, a holiday shopping event for families with limited resources.

mystery symposium
Sisters in Crime-Central Jersey will host its second annual Clued-In Press Mystery Symposium beginning at 9 a.m. on April 1 at the Jamesburg Senior Center, 133 Stevens Ave. Registration is set for 8:15 a.m.
The day will start with a workshop panel titled "Behind the Scenes." Four published authors will work with individuals who are interested in learning the basics of mystery writing.
Following the panel, two sheriff's officers from the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office will discuss their role in maintaining order in society. Female officers will discuss their training and experience. A question-and-answer session will follow.
After lunch and the announcement of the Clued-In Press Short Story contest winners, the award-winning writing team Jim and Nikoo McGoldrick (Jan Coffey, May McGoldrick) will discuss writing, including their new techno-thriller due to be released in April. After taking questions from the audience, the authors will sign their latest books.
The afternoon workshops will conclude with a courtroom cross-examination re-enactment presented by Jamesburg attorney Stephen Philpit.
A public book sale and signing will begin at 4 p.m.

slate Frick Museum trip
The East Brunswick Arts Commission and the East Brunswick Recreation Department will sponsor an April 6 trip to the Frick Museum, New York City.
The museum, which represents the 19th-century home of Henry Clay Frick, one of the United States' early financial barons, houses an art collection featuring works by 15th- to 19th-century artists. The Frick is host to the well-known Goya collection.
Tickets cost $35 each, including bus transportation and entrance to the museum.

Hospital offers career workshop for students
Raritan Bay Medical Center will offer an intensive July 10-14 Health Care Connection Career Workshop designed for students who are entering their senior year of high school and are interested in pursuing careers in health care. The program will take place at the medical center's Old Bridge division, off Ferry Road, between routes 9 and 18, and at its Perth Amboy division, 530 New Brunswick Ave.
Six selected students will observe a variety of health-care situations by working with physicians, nurses and staff in a wide range of departments including pathology, the emergency room, nursing units, the laboratory, surgical suite, pharmacy and more. Experts in each field will provide career information and resources. Students will engage in hands-on activities and observations designed to offer insight into a large number of health-care careers.
Acceptance into the Health Care Connection program is limited. Transportation between the medical center's Old Bridge and Perth Amboy divisions will be the responsibility of each program participant.

School volleyball game
to benefit MS research
The Spotswood High School History Club and Octagon Community Service Club will host their annual Volleyball Game to Fight Multiple Sclerosis (MS) from 6-8 p.m. on April 27 at the school, Summerhill Road.
All proceeds will benefit the MS Research Foundation. In the last five years, the volleyball event has raised almost $25,000 to fight MS. Club adviser Frank Yusko is battling the disease.
Admission is a donation in any amount for the MS Research Foundation. The public is welcome.

The East Brunswick High School (EBHS) volleyball team will sponsor a car wash from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 8 at the high school, Cranbury Road.
Cost is $5 for cars, $7 for sport utility vehicles.

Artists sought for E.B. fine art, craft show/sale
The East Brunswick Arts Commission and the Visual Arts Celebration Committee will sponsor an Outdoor Juried Show and Sale of Fine Art and Fine Handmade Crafts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 10 around the pond in the East Brunswick municipal complex, Jean Walling Civic Center. Rain date is June 11.
The daylong family event, which will provide artists with a venue to exhibit their work, demonstrate their talents and offer original art and craft items for sale, is intended to attract buyers from throughout the metro area.
Entries will be considered in all media including oils/acrylics, watercolors, photography, sculpture, graphics/drawings/pastels, mixed media and fine handcrafts. Up to $2,000 in cash prizes will be awarded by professional judges.
East Brunswick residents in grades 5-12 also are invited to participate. The students' artwork will be judged, and prizes and ribbons will be awarded.
Application deadline is May 1.

Nominees sought for SRHS Wall of Fame
South River High School (SRHS) is once again seeking nominations for selection to the South River High School Wall of Fame. The purpose of the wall is to identify and recognize the superior achievement and performance of former SRHS students within various fields of endeavor. These individuals and the recognition of their achievements will serve as role models for current and future SRHS students. The award is in no way limited to athletic achievement. The Wall of Fame stands in the main corridor of the high school and contains the names of the award recipients on plaques of recognition. Nominees for the Wall of Fame will be considered based on the following criteria:
+ must have attended or graduated from South River High School;
+ must exhibit a high level of achievement in his or her field;
+ must be a positive role model for South River youth.

Animal-tracking event next up at Cheesequake
A program titled "Tracks" is planned for 1 p.m. on April 2 at Cheesequake State Park, Route 34, Old Bridge.
Interested individuals will meet at 1 p.m. at the park's Interpretive Center for a short discussion on animal tracking and identification. Participants will learn how to cast tracks with plaster and identify animal tracks in the field.

Club offers scholarships for graduating seniors
The Monroe Township Mother's Club is offering $500 scholarships to two Monroe Township High School (MTHS) seniors who have actively performed community service for the township of Monroe. Each candidate should write an essay specifying his or her Monroe community-service experience. Interested students must submit their essays to the MTHS guidance office by April 30.
