Last weekend Union High School hosted the youth New Jersey State Wrestling Championships, with wrestlers who had prequalified at regional qualifiers since January. Representing the East Brunswick Wrestling Club, were two wrestlers, Ricky Perrine (70 pounds) and Michael O'Kane (80 pounds), who again made history by placing at the tournament. After losing his first match, Ricky Perrine jumped back into the action and won matches in the consolation rounds to finish seventh. Michael O'Kane, who also lost his first match, stormed back through the field to claim eighth.
The Monroe Township fourth-grade girls all-star basketball team, recently formed after the recreation season concluded, played in the Hopewell Valley YMCA fourth-grade girls all-star tournament this past weekend and finished with a 2-1 record - good enough for a third-place finish. In game one, Monroe defeated Princeton, 20-11. Marisa Monasseri led the team with nine points. Kelly Widener had eight points and 10 rebounds. Brittany Ballack led defensively with 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. In game two, Monroe dropped a close contest to the host team Hopewell Valley Blue, 28-15. Monroe trailed by 12 points with three minutes to play and closed to within five points with a minute remaining, before Hopewell went on an 8-0 run to seal the victory. Widener led the team with nine points and Jessie Shea had four points and three assists. Kennedy Nazario played strong defense with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
In the consolation game Monroe faced off once again against Princeton and rode their defense to a 18-5 victory. Nicole Sorensen led the team with five points, followed by Mariann Glade and Julia Scott with four points each. Marqaux Petersen dominated the boards with 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Alexa Kutz added eight rebounds and five assists in the game. Head coach Mark Glade was pleased with his team's effort.
"Our girls played really well this weekend. This is the first time that they played man-to-man defense, and they adapted nicely to the concept," he said. "These girls just started practicing as a team two weeks ago and bonded immediately."
The team is hoping to play in one more tournament this spring and work out together over the summer in preparation for a full travel schedule next winter. The players are Jessie Shea, Julia Scott, Mariann Glade, Brittany Ballack, Marqaux Petersen, Marisa Monasseri, Kelly Widener, Nicole Sorensen, Kennedy Nazario and Alexa Kutz.
Head coach is Mark Glade; the assistant coaches are Chris Petersen and Tom Scott.
Monroe's U11 boys travel basketball team captured the 12U Red Division Championship in Central Jersey Basketball League from North Brunswick (70-57). Their victory puts an exclamation point on a perfect 14-0 league record. This also is the travel program's first three-peat Divisional Champions in the Central Jersey Basketball League. Tyler Cushman (five points, one assist, no turnovers), Ryan Genevieve (19 points, four rebounds, one assists), Victor Sorrento (14 points, five rebounds, five assists, four steals) and Danny Brix (18 points, seven rebounds, four assists, one steal) hit a combined 7-for-11 from beyond three-point range. Meanwhile, Ahmid Williams (eight points, five assists, two steals, no turnovers), Ryan Germano (four points, three rebounds) and Peter Gulick (two points) were breaking down their opponents' interior defense with slashing drives to the basket. The team shot a season-high 64 percent from behind the three-point arc and an incredible 59 percent inside the arc. Defensively, Chris Tagliaferro, Brian Nale and Anthony Battaglia assisted in anchoring the team's defense as the team pulled down 19 rebounds and created seven steals. The U11s concluded their season by winning 20 of their last 21 games, finishing up with a season high 16-game winning streak and completing their best travel season with 34 wins and four losses. The team has completed its third year in the Monroe Travel Program and has now accumulated 91 wins with 11 losses.
The coaches are Gary Cushman and Tim Brix.
The Monroe Recreation Golf League, for residents, guests and high school students, will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, starting April 4 at Clearbrook Golf Club. The first tee time is 4 p.m. Registration fee is $10, with $15 greens fee payable at the course. Registration is at the Community Center.
