The East Brunswick Xtreme girls 10U softball team has continued its successful season by winning the Babe Ruth District 1 Title and thereby qualifying for the state tournament, to be held in Sparta. The team was undefeated in District play. The team had previously captured first place in the East Brunswick Memorial Day Tournament. The team is led by the pitching quartet of Niki Falco, Gabrielle Kelliher, Brittany Lee and Jocelyne Spezio. The defense is anchored by catchers Jill Reed and Gabrielle Sachs with strong play up the middle featuring Brittany Ubitz at shortstop and Marlena Bevilacqua at second base. The offense has been keyed by contributions from Bernadette Maligranda, Shelby Lipson, Melissa Conover, Morgan Lee, Sarah Frost and Kelsey McDonald.
The following are the results of the Tamarack Men's Golf Association's Meadows of Middlesex event on July 1. Low net went to George Martis with a 76, followed by Jeff Kaufman (68) and Ron Becker (70). Kauffman took the low gross with a 74, followed by Pete Zhong (80) and Bob Sobieski (80). At the July 2 outing, Jeff Byrnes had the low net with a 66, followed by Rudy D'Emilio (68) and Sobieski (69). Byrnes also had the low gross (72), followed by Gran Herring Sr. (73) and Sobieski (75).
At the Pink Lady Tournament, the team of Frank Helstowski, Ray Marko, Mike Weiss and Stan Momot took first, followed by the team of Grant Herring Sr., Joe Horniacek, Paul Patrick and Ron Becker.
The East Brunswick/Spotswood Golden Bear Chargers will hold a registration on July 18 from 6-8 p.m. at the Spotswood Municipal Building located on Summerhill Road, Spotswood. The Central Jersey Lightning U10 fast pitch softball team added to its successful season with a second-place finish in the South Plainfield fifth annual Summer Sizzler this past weekend. Hitting solidly throughout the weekend, the Lightning produced 55 runs against their opponents and complemented the pitching of Micaela McSpadden and Jess Dudra. McSpadden racked up an unbelievable 45 strikeouts. The championship game, the sixth game of the weekend, was against friendly rival Hillsborough Hustle. It remained 1-1 through the fifth inning in a pitching duel between the two foes. The Lightning allowed two runs in the sixth, though, to ultimately lose the nail-biter, 3-1.
Catching for the Lightning was Haylie Mikulak and Claire Preston, with McSpadden and Dudra alternating on first, Meagan Costello and Jacquie Neminski at second, Hunter Fecskovics at short, Samantha Mattola and Sara Acevedo at third, and the outfield was supported by the gold gloves of Nicole Razzano, Kaitlyn Roughan and Siobhan Tracy.

The Monroe Township Soccer Club will hold in-person registration for the fall season for all divisions on July 13, 18 and 20 at the Rec Center, 120 Monmouth Road, 7-9 p.m. Registration forms will be at the Rec Center. The East Brunswick Wrestling Club will hold a weeklong summer camp July 17-21 at Churchill Junior High, 6-9 p.m., for all kids in grades K-9. Raritan Valley Soccer Officials Association is seeking candidates interested in officiating high school soccer in Middlesex, Hunterdon, Somerset and Warren counties. A World Cup Soccer Camp, sponsored by South River Recreation, will be held at South River High School July 17-21 from 9 a.m. to noon for ages 8-14 at a cost of $75, and 9-11 a.m. for ages 5-7 at a cost of $75. The fee includes T-shirt, trophy and evaluation. Camp is open to residents and nonresidents, and is coached by the South River High School varsity staff. Registration is still being accepted. The East Brunswick High School Booster Club will hold a golf outing Aug. 21 at the Bunker Hill Golf Course in Griggstown. The cost is $80 per person, and includes greens fees, golf cart, snacks and beverages throughout the day, lunch, and prizes. The Central Jersey Hot Shots, a U17 girls soccer team, captured back-to-back championships in the last two tournaments. The Hot Shots have been victorious in four major tournaments throughout the Northeast. The girls also won their division in the powerful MAPS league. The most recent tournament championships won were at the Pocono Cup and the C.J. International, played at Fort Dix. The Hot Shots have shown great heart and team chemistry this season, playing to a 21-3-4 record.
The team members are Lindsey Dragline, Ashley Grabowski, Brittney Brodniak, Caitlin Flaherty, Carly Breining, Casey Caruso, Christine Noppenberger, Kate Bouchard, Kathryn Smith, Kirsten Gash, Kourtney Brodniak, Lauren Hoening, Lauren Swissman, Melissa Demko, Michelle Olive, Morgan Brown, Shannon Mastrogiavanni and Julia Camp. The team is coached and trained by Brad Caruso, who is assisted by Alissa Kacar and Joe Caruso.
