Floyd Hall Arena, on the campus of Montclair State University, will be hosting an Open House Ice Fair on Saturday and Sunday. The event is free to the public and features a special two-for-one rate for public skates held on Saturday from 12:40-5:10 p.m. and Sunday from 2:50-5:50 p.m.

The open house will provide many family-friendly events both indoors and outdoors such as figure skating showcase performances, street hockey tournament, relay races and outdoor games for children. The event will also provide patrons with an opportunity to participate in free lessons provided by qualified staff including figure skating, hockey and Pilates instruction.

In Central Jersey Pop Warner Football action, the Raritan Bay Cougars hosted the Colonia Patriots.

In the Mitey Mite division, the Patriots defeated the Cougars 7-0. Daniel Caseres and Jonathan Houston had strong games on offense, while Sami Asif, Jake Dorr and August Vagts played well on defense.

In the Junior Pee Wee game, the Cougars and the Patriots played to a 0-0 tie. Alex Hoheb, Fabian Silva, Chris Hulse and Sean Ferrano all turned in solid defensive efforts.

The Cougar Pee Wees defeated the Patriots 13-6. Jesse Meyer accounted for all the scoring for the Cougars, scoring on a short run and a 65-yard interception return. Matthew McGuiness, Cory Bennetti and Roberto Rojas all came up with big plays on defense.

In the Midget division, Colonia held onto a 20-14 lead to defeat the Cougars. Zach Zimmelink scored two TDs for the Cougars. Jarrod Eardley also had two receptions for the Cougar offense. Christopher Torres and Kyle O'Connor each recorded a QB sack.

The Golden Bear Charger Junior Midgets defeated Hopewell Valley, 33-6, last weekend. The two defending Central Jersey champs picked up where they left off on the very first play from scrimmage when QB Dean Vitale hit Tyler Mataya with a 77-yard strike. On their next possession, Vitale hit Mark Kukoda with a 55-yard pass for a 14-0 lead. Vitale then found Sean Hudson in the end zone for a 21-0 lead. Still in the first quarter, Vitale picked off a Hopewell Valley pass and raced 45 yards for a 27-0 first-quarter lead. Dan McCracken darted 35 yards for the final score in the second quarter. GBC's defense was led by Jeremy Baum, Max Cartelli and James Wittkop. Next up, GBC will host Franklin at 2:30 p.m. Spotswood High School on Sunday.

The Girls Soccer League of Old Bridge is now accepting applications for the fall recreation season. All girls between the ages of 4 and 16 are eligible to participate. The following are the results of the Tamarack Men's Golf Association's Club Championship, Tamarack, held Sept. 3. Norman Loney defeated Frank Helstowski, Jeff Kaufman defeated Peter Zhong, John Lay III defeated Joe Horniacek, Tom Pellicane defeated Bob Sobieski, Jeff Byrnes defeated Bob Tilley, Antonio Toto defeated Carmine Nesta, and John Lay Jr. and Grant Herring both advanced with a bye.

In the A Flight, George Martis defeated Ron Becker, Frank Sestito defeated Herman Suppe, Jim Castucci defeated Jeff Gulics, Keith Chalecki defeated Rudy Demilio, Al Portano defeated Anthony Nesta, Wes Traskiewicz defeated Ciro Boccio, and Ray Marko and Mike Weiss received byes.

Garden State Baseball League, located in Woodbridge, is still accepting team registration for teams 13U through men's college into its Fall Ball Program. GSBL will kick off the fall season with games on Sept 17 and will play doubleheaders on Sundays, mostly in the Woodbridge area, with limited travel, until the end of October (weather permitting). The Old Bridge Basketball Association will be holding tryouts for boys entering the 5/6 and 7/8 grades to compete in the 2006-07 fall/winter basketball season. All tryouts will take place at Old Bridge High School on the following dates:

Grades 5/6, 10-11 years old (cannot turn age 12 until after July 31) - Sept. 12 and 13, from 6-7:30 p.m..

Grades 7/8, 12-13 years old (cannot turn age 14 until after July 31) - Sept. 12 and 13, from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

They are looking for dedicated team players with a passion for the game to play in competitive leagues and tournaments throughout the Central Jersey area. This is a great opportunity to join a winning program and help shape a team focused on developing future high school and collegiate prospects. The following are the results of the Tamarack Women's Golf Association's Aug. 24 outing - par threes and fives, half handicap. Bernie Janas won the A Flight with a 12, followed by Sandi Sulam (12) and Dot Teringer (14). Joyce Nicolaison took the B Flight with a 7, followed by Sally Deyette (11) and Suzanne Levine (12). Jeanne Reaph won the C Flight with a 13, followed by Poulin (13) and Debbie Cohen (16). Ann Marie Broehl had the fewest putts with 16.

The Old Bridge Jaguars U13 boy's travel soccer team is looking for players for the fall/spring 2006-07 season. The Jaguars play is in the Monmouth Ocean Soccer Association (MOSA) travel league and are in the National 3 flight. Birth dates between Aug. 1, 1993, and July 31, 1994 are eligible. Old Bridge fall baseball is now accepting applications for the fall recreation season. All boys ages 8-16 are eligible to participate, new age as of 4/30/07. For those men and women, 18 years and older who wish to become a certified basketball official for high school, middle school or recreational leagues the Central East Jersey Basketball officials organization is now accepting applications for their fall clinic. The class begins Sept. 21 and runs from 7-9 p.m. on most Tuesdays and Thursdays through Nov. 21, with classroom training at East Brunswick High School and on-court training at St. Peter's High School in New Brunswick.
