The East Brunswick Golden Bear Charger (GBC) Junior Midgets improved to 3-0 with a 40-27 win over Carteret last weekend. Despite being one of the youngest teams in Central Jersey, GBC continued to rack up victories and put on an offensive show, scoring on their first six possessions. In the first quarter, QB Dean Vitale raced 18 yards for the first score. Then, tailback Garret Walters scored from 10 yards out. Vitale hit Mark Kukoda with a 10-yard strike to take a 22-0 lead. Carteret returned the kickoff for a TD, and Garret Walters answered with a 70-yard kick return of his own for a 28-7 first-quarter lead. Vitale then hit a new target, Jeff Lynch, for a 40-yard TD for a 34-14 halftime lead. In the second half, Carteret scored twice but GBC held them off when Vitale recorded his third TD toss to Tyler Mataya for another score to cap it. GBC will play Sunday at Spotswood High School against 4-0 Millstone.

The GBC Junior Pee Wee's caught the Sayreville Leprechauns and stole their pot of gold, 33-6. After an early Sayreville touchdown, GBC came back with 33 unanswered points. QB Ryan Smolin ran in GBC's first TD to tie things up at 6-6. RB Vinny Fiorello then broke a 39-yard TD run to take the lead. The extra point was run in by RB Amir Bell, making the score GBC 13, Sayreville 6. Still in the second quarter, QB Ryan Smolin ran in a 16-yard TD. The extra point was run in by Vinny Fiorello. In the third quarter, RB Amir Bell ran in from the 4-yard line to make the score 26-6. Early in the fourth quarter, FB Brian Jackson broke a 24-yard TD run, and again bulled in for the extra point. Other highlights included FB Anthony Burnett and HB Levi Holmes helping GBC drive downfield; interceptions by Danny LoGatto and Amir Bell; a 25-yard punt by Jayson Parker and the great defensive efforts of Mike Allen, Andrew Scrivanich, Tyler Andricsak, James Caffrey, Nick LoGatto, Matt Martino, Zach Schrier, Anthony Fischer, Jayson Parker, Ryan Silverman, Ronoldy Martinez, Richard Faulkner, Eden Cohen, Carl Taylor and Matt Rosofsky, to name a few.

The following are results from the Tamarack Men's Golf Association's Club Championship: Grant Herring defeated Jeff Kaufman, Jeff Byrnes defeated Antonio Toto, John Lay Jr. defeated Norm Loney, and John Lay III defeated Tom Pelicane. In the A Flight, Frank Sestito defeated George Martis, Ray Marko defeated Jim Castucci, Mike Weiss defeated Keith Chalecki, and Wes Traskiewicz defeated Al Portano.

In the Blind Dram Tournament, first place went to the team of Lay Jr., Bob Sobieski, Sestito and Stan Momot, followed by the team of Byrnes, Steve Szymanski, Cerro Boccio and Martis. Third place went to Herring, Dave Colgan and Chalecki.

The Old Bridge Hustlers girls softball team announced the formation of its 2007 U14 team. Any girl who was born between 1992 and 1993 and is an experienced softball player is welcome to tryout for the Hustlers. Tryouts will be held Sunday, Oct. 8, and Sunday, Oct 15, at Carl Sandberg Junior High School softball field. The field is located behind the school building off Throckmorton and Ticetown roads in Old Bridge. The following are the results of Tamarack Women's Nine-Hole Golf Association's President Cup - match play. Inge Robinson defeated Dot Teringer, while in the Vice President's Cup, Ronnie Bohn defeated Diane Del Masto. At the Aug. 31 weekly competition - better ball, teams of two (80 percent handicap) - Ann Marie Broehl and Janet Hefelfinger took first with a 34, followed by Marion Batchelor and Jeanne Reaph (36), Ellie de la Bandera and Roseann Marosy (37), and Kathleen Farmer and Doris Colgrove (40). Broehl had fewest putts with 17.

The East Brunswick/Spotswood Golden Bear Charger Tiny Mites (ages 5-7) had a condensed game schedule recently due to the poor weather. They had their opening game on Wednesday, Sept. 6, as well as one on Sunday, Sept. 10. Wednesday's game got off to a fast start with Tucker Nevin making an awesome touchdown for the Blue Team. The Gold Team was led by Lucas Espada with a great defensive stand. But the Blue Team opened it up with a 50-yard run by Austin Taylor resulting in a touchdown. Although the Gold Team put up a tough defensive battle, the Blue Team scored again by Zahir Jackson, ending the game with the Blue Team winning 21-0. Sunday's game started off as a battle of defenses. The Gold Team's defensive efforts were led by Tylor Jacobs and Lucas Espada. It was a scoreless game until the fourth quarter when Austin Taylor managed to get past the Gold Team's defense and scored the game's only touchdown, ending the game with the Blue Team winning, 7-0.

The Golden Bear Charger Junior Midgets beat the Franklin Warriors, 26-6. After Franklin scored a 55-yard dash on their first play from scrimmage, GBC's defense held them to 78 total yards, led by Jeff Lynch and Kevin Behan. GBC took their next possession 66 yards, capped by a Garret Walters two-yard plunge. In the second quarter QB Dean Vitale darted 25 yards for a GBC 13-6 half-time lead. In the third quarter Vitale scored again from the nine, set up by a 32-yard strike to Mark Kukoda. Walters scored again from 13 yards out to finish it 26-6. Garret Cuddy had 81 yards on 16 carries. GBC will host Carteret Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Garden State Baseball League is looking for fine amateur baseball teams in the Central Jersey Area who are interested in some competitive wood bat games on Sundays this September. They are looking for teams within a 13U to 16U bracket and 17U and older. They will share the costs of umpires at your field or theirs. Garden State Baseball League, located in Woodbridge, is still accepting team registration for teams 13U through men's college into its Fall Ball Program. GSBL will kick off the fall season with games on Sept 17 and will play doubleheaders on Sundays, mostly in the Woodbridge area, with limited travel, until the end of October (weather permitting).
