Monday Morning panel will hold Oct. 16 forum

The Monday Morning Advocacy Network of Middlesex County will hold its next meeting from 7-9 p.m. on Oct. 16 at the East Brunswick Public Library, conference room 3, Jean Walling Civic Center Drive.

Topic will be "Getting Ready for the General Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 7." Guest speaker Beth Feehan of the NJ HAVA (Help America Vote Act) Coalition will offer an update on HAVA as the election approaches. Changes in voting as part of HAVA, such as new voters presenting identification at the polls, verified paper trails of votes cast, sound accommodations in electronic voting machines, and more will be discussed.

Other meeting topics will include candidates representing Middlesex County in this year's election; get-out-the-vote efforts and other related issues; plans for the Monday Morning Advocacy Network's November meeting at which accessibility will be discussed with code-enforcement officers from municipalities in Middlesex County; the panel's next accessibility tour; legislative updates; accessible-parking updates; and more.

Registration going on for Frost on Pumpkin

Registration forms are available for the 27th annual South River Frost on the Pumpkin 10K Road Race set for Oct. 29 at Dailey's Pond, Thomas and William streets.

All proceeds will be used to send developmentally disabled South River children to Camp Donna during the summer.

The day will include the 10K Road Race, the 1-Mile Health Walk or Run, and the Lollipop Race for children. Ghost runners (individuals who want to support the cause but do not wish to run in the race) also are invited.

The 10K race is open to males and females of all ages. Registration is $15 until Oct. 26, $18 from 7:30-9:15 a.m. on the day of the race. Start time is set for 9:30 a.m.

Registration fee for ghost runners is $9 in advance or from 7:30-9:30 a.m. on event day.

Individuals of all ages are welcome to participate in the 1-Mile Health Walk or Run. Registration is $5 until Oct. 26, $6 from 7:30-8:45 a.m. on day of the event. Start time is 9 a.m.

The Lollipop Race is open to youngsters up to age 11. Registration fee is $1 in advance or from 7:30-8:15 a.m. on race day. Start time is 8:30 a.m.

All events will take place rain or shine.

Concert proceeds will aid Daniel Cunnius

A benefit concert featuring artists Spook Handy, Melvin McKnight, Virago, Jeff Mastroberti, Jung Wombats!, Bill Simmons, Bitter Herb and Tommy Anton is planned for 5-10 p.m. on Nov. 4 at Hummers Nite Club, 51 Main St., South River.

The event will be held in honor of Daniel Cunnius, a 48-year-old developmentally disabled man whose deficits make it difficult for him to function without assistance. All proceeds from the event will go to defray the healthcare bills resulting from his mental retardation. A trauma at birth left Cunnius without oxygen, which led to his mental retardation. Born and raised in New Brunswick, he was moved to a group home in Pennsylvania at the age of 13. The concert will feature a cash bar. Light refreshments will be served from 5-7 p.m. Cost is $30 per person for general admission. Additional monetary donations will be gratefully accepted. Individuals under age 21 will not be admitted.

E.B. Road Races planned for Oct. 22

The 29th annual East Brunswick Road Races, featuring the running of the Kids Pumpkin Dashes, the John Ragone 5K Race, the East Brunswick 10K Race and the 1-Mile Fun Run/Fitness Walk, is set for Oct. 22 at Crystal Springs Family Aquatic Center, Dunhams Corner Road, East Brunswick. Race-day registration will begin at 11 a.m. Advance registration is set for noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Brunswick Square Mall, Route 18, East Brunswick.

The day is sponsored by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield and held in cooperation with the East Brunswick Department of Recreation and Community Services and the Raritan Valley Road Runners.

Proceeds will go to the Daisy Foundation, an organization that provides education through recreation for approximately children and young people with disabilities.

Kids Dashes are set to start at noon. All participating youngsters will receive a ribbon and a free pumpkin to decorate.

The 1-Mile Fun Run/Fitness Walk will begin at 12:20 p.m. All finishers will receive a medal. Preregistered Fun Run participants will receive a free T-shirt and goodie bag.

The 5K and 10K races will go off at 1:05 p.m. and 1:20 p.m., respectively. Every preregistered 5K and 10K runner will receive a free T-shirt and goodie bag. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male finishers, female finishers, East Brunswick finishers and age-group winners.

The John Ragone 5K will have special meaning this year as Ragone, a well-known area coach and runner for whom the race was named in 2000, passed away this year.

The 5K and 10K races count for 500 points for USA Track and Field members.

There will be games and face-painting for children and post-race refreshments and entertainment for all. An appearance by WMGQ Radio representatives is scheduled.

Highland Park to celebrate fall season

The fifth annual Autumn in the Park event, to celebrate the spirit of the fall season in downtown Highland Park, is set for 6-9 p.m. on Oct. 19 along Raritan Avenue (Route 27) from Adelaide to Sixth avenues, rain or starlight.

The free event will feature live entertainment throughout the town, horse-and-carriage rides, hayrides and prize giveaways from many participating merchants.

Live musical performances will fill the town's sidewalks and storefronts. More than a dozen musical acts are scheduled, including Chef Dave and Nikita, The Noisy Neighbors, the John Bianculli Trio and Black Circle Symphony. Horse-and-carriage rides will wind through Highland Park's streets. Hayrides will follow Raritan Avenue. Israeli folk dancers will be on hand to perform and teach basic steps.

The Passport to Fun drawing will introduce participants to local retailers. By stopping in different downtown stores, individuals may enter the drawing to win gifts and prizes, all donated by participating businesses.

The event is sponsored by Main Street Highland Park, the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce, Unity Bank of Highland Park and the Home News.

Demo Night to defray Daly's medical costs

A Bounce Back Demo Night to benefit the Michael Daly Trust will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 20 at Our Lady of Victories Parish Monsignor Dalton Hall, Main Street, Sayreville.

The event will feature more than 12 vendors including Tastefully Simple, Home and Garden Party, Party Lite, the Longaberger Company, Creative Memories, Pampered Chef, Avon, Mary Kay, Tupperware, Stamp It Up! and Pocketbooks and More. Jewelry also will be available. All vendors have agreed to donate some or all of their profits in addition to merchandise or baskets for a raffle.

Dinner meeting next up

for environmental panel

The Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership will hold its annual dinner meeting at 7 p.m. on Oct. 17 at the Milltown Senior Center, 60 Violet Terrace.

The partnership is a nonprofit, volunteer organization with environmental interests in East Brunswick, North Brunswick, South Brunswick, New Brunswick and Milltown.

The dinner meeting, prepared by members, is open to all interested residents and partnership members.

Guest speaker David Pringle of the New Jersey Environmental Federation will offer a presentation titled "Environmental Challenges Facing New Jersey: Open Space, Clean Water, Economic Growth and More." A question-and-answer session will follow. Pringle works full time on local, state and federal environmental campaigns regarding clean, safe and affordable water, prevention of health-threatening pollution and environmentally safe workplaces.

Families will build

scarecrows in Jamesburg

The Jamesburg Civic Association will sponsor the annual Jamesburg Family Scarecrow-Building event from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 14 at Veterans Park, East Railroad Avenue.

Straw, twine, frames and ties will be provided. Participants should bring magic markers, old clothes, hats and head material to create their scarecrow. Finished works will be placed along West Railroad Avenue on stakes provided by the borough. Scarecrows may also be positioned at Lakeview Mansion.

Pumpkins for the borough Pumpkin Fest also may be picked up at Veterans Park during the scarecrow-building event.

Elks to hold spaghetti dinner benefit Oct. 15

East Brunswick Elks Lodge No. 2370, Oakmont Road, will hold a spaghetti dinner benefit for Roxanne Guzman Oct. 15 from 2-7 p.m.

Proceeds will assist the Guzman family burdened with medical bills and daily living expenses as a results of Roxanne's vehicle that was struck broadside by a school bus in South Brunswick in November. She is recovering from the accident that has left her with physical and neurological trauma with short term memory loss and paralysis.

Church choir, orchestra to perform Mozart work

The Church of the Immaculate Conception Choir Soloists and Orchestra will present Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Requiem" at 8 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 18 South St., Spotswood. The performance will honor the Rev. Harold L. Hirsch. Suggested donation is $15.
