The East Brunswick Golden Bear Chargers Small Pee Wee Cheerleading Squad took a first-place finish, making them Division Champs at the Central Jersey Pop Warner Competition held on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton. GBC's Small Jr. Pee Wee Squad placed second. Both squads will be moving on to the state qualifier on Oct. 28 in Trenton to vie for a spot at the Regional Level.
The Monroe Township Hoops Association is holding tryouts for its travel basketball season, which runs November through March. The boys instructional travel team includes boys 8 years old and under (born between 8/1/97 and 7/31/98). The tryout dates for the team are Oct. 27, 6:30-8 p.m., at the Brookside School; Oct. 28, 3:30-5 p.m., at the Woodland School; and Nov. 4, 3:30-5 p.m., at the Woodland School.
Candidates must be a Monroe resident and attend at least one scheduled tryout session. If candidates cannot make any tryout dates, they should contact tbrixsr@comcast.net. All candidates must bring a copy of a birth certificate.
Players who are selected for a team will be responsible for paying a registration fee. These fees cover the entrance fees for league and tournament play, as well as referee and scorekeeper expenses. Players and their parents selected for a team are expected to participate in MTHA's travel fundraising activities.
The Monroe U12 Lady Falcons improved to 2-0 this past week with a 29-21 win over Millstone. Monroe produced a balanced offensive attack as scoring came from Sam Clark (nine points), Jena Pritzlaff (six), Christina Felice (five), Stephanie Johler (four), Kylie Davidson (three) and Jackie Racine (two). On the defensive end, Alexa Carini and Kristen Junquet each had a steal while Keriann Manziano and Meghan McClaren each pulled down a pair of rebounds. The Monroe U12 Lady Falcons next face Freehold at home on Sunday.
The Monroe U11 Lady Falcons opened play in the Mid-Monmouth League with a 42-13 win over Middletown on Oct. 18. Monroe's defense surrendered only 13 points all game. The defense was led by Jennifer Baum, Caress Fenton and Kelsey Ramcharitar. On the offensive side, Monroe received scoring from Jacqueline Racine (10 points), Kylie Davidson (nine points), Stephanie Johler (eight points), Junquet, Kristen (four points), Meghan McClaren (two points), Colleen Campbell (two points), and Christina Felice (eight points). The U12 girls next play Marlboro Middle School on Oct. 25.
The Golden Bear Charger Junior Midgets advanced to their third straight Central Jersey Championship in convincing manner, defeating Franklin, 30-7. Quarterback Dean Vitale scored early in the first quarter, set up by Ron Santana's 73-yard run for a quick 8-0 lead. Then Garret Walters raced in from the 10 for a 16-0 lead. In the second quarter, Vitale hit Dan MacCracken with an 11-yard strike and Mark Kukoda busted a 33-yard run to finish it. GBC will take on Plainfield in a 2004 rematch at Allentown High School Sunday at 1:30. GBC won the first game, 13-12.
