Carmela A. Novello Tornello

Mrs. Tornello, 87, of East Brunswick, died Nov. 10, 2006, in Care One, East Brunswick. Prior to her retirement in 1979, she was a sales associate with J.C. Penney, East Brunswick, where she worked for more than 16 years. Surviving are her husband, Vincent; a son, Salvatore Tornello of Medford; a sister, Tina Scordo of East Brunswick; and a grandson. A Mass was offered at St. Bartholomew's Church, East Brunswick. Entombment was in Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick.

Hilda Shuhala

Mrs. Shuhala, 77, of East Brunswick, died Nov. 23, 2006, in the Pavilions at Forrestal, Princeton. Her husband, Peter Shuhala, died in 1977. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Leonard and Emily Shuhala of Virginia; a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Peter Gurka of East Brunswick; and a grandson. Private services and interment were under the direction of Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick.

Sandra I. Sax

Mrs. Sax, 74, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of East Brunswick, died Nov. 24, 2006, in Sherman House, Scottsdale. Her husband, Myer Sax, died in 1991. Surviving are a son, Bruce Sax of East Brunswick; a daughter, Phillis Pilvinis of Scottsdale; a brother, Gerald Portnoy of Monroe; and six grandchildren. Services were under the direction of Crabiel Home for Funerals, Milltown. Interment was in Washington Cemetery, Deans section of South Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

William Tyhanic

Mr. Tyhanic, 78, of Spotswood, died Nov. 12, 2006, at home. Prior to his retirement in 1987, he was employed as an electrical engineer with Kimberly Clark/Peter J. Schweitzer, Spotswood, where he worked for more than 30 years. His wife, Peggy Bettes Tyhanic, died in 2000. Surviving are three daughters, Linda Kies and Patricia Staffa, both of Monroe, and Peggy Gerling of Roosevelt; three sons, Gary P. Giles of Daytona Beach, Fla., William T. Tyhanic of Spotswood and Russell L. Tyhanic of Jamesburg; a sister, Ann McMahon of Sun City, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services were held at Brunswick Memorial Home, East Brunswick. Interment was in Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2600 Route 1, North Brunswick, NJ 08902.

John Ostrelich

Mr. Ostrelich, 55, of East Brunswick, formerly of Spotswood, died Nov. 17, 2006, in University Medical Center at Princeton. Surviving are his wife, Rosemary Barow Ostrelich; a brother, Michael Ostrelich of Saratoga, N.Y.; and two sisters, Lillian Gargan of Saratoga and Johanna Eckstrom of West Milford. A Mass was offered at Immaculate Conception Church, Spotswood. Interment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Aliquippa, Pa. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jennie E. Modzelewski Gesicki

Mrs. Gesicki, 91, of South River, died Nov. 18, 2006, in Care One, East Brunswick. Her husband, Henry C. Gesicki, died in 1972. Surviving are a son, Henry R. Gesicki of South River, with whom she lived; two daughters, Jeannette G. Mark of Monroe and Charlotte Wesp of South River; a brother, Chester Modzelewski of East Brunswick; a sister, Stella Weber of Manchester; and two granddaughters. A Mass was offered at St. Mary of Ostrabrama Church, South River. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Brunswick. Mary R. Gallagher Lynch

Mrs. Lynch, 52, of Forest Hill, Md., formerly of Old Bridge, died Nov. 23, 2006, in McLeod Medical Center, Florence, S.C. Surviving are a son, Frank Lynch of South Amboy; a brother, John Gallagher of New Castle, Del.; and two sisters, Linda Flanagan of Brick and Eileen Boll of Monroe. A Mass was offered at St. Mary's Church, South Amboy. Entombment was in Holy Cross Burial Park Mausoleum, East Brunswick.

Thomas J. DeVoe Sr.

Mr. DeVoe, 75, of the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen, died Nov. 20, 2006, in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was a cabinet maker at J. Mielach, Edison; Marford Cabinet Shop, East Brunswick; and Exhibit Group, Highland Park. Surviving are his wife, Joan F. Dolan DeVoe; two sons, Thomas J. DeVoe Jr. of Cliffwood and Michael DeVoe of Sayreville; three daughters, Patricia DeVoe of the Avenel section of Woodbridge, Barbara Rozmus of Virginia and Joan Marie DeVoe of Virginia; and nine grandchildren. A Mass was offered at St. Joseph's Church, Keyport. Arrangements were under the direction of Day Funeral Home, Keyport. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.

Phyllis Stapleton Chartier

Mrs. Chartier, 71, of South River, died Nov. 17, 2006, in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Prior to her retirement in 2003, she was a cafeteria manager with the East Brunswick school district for 14 years. Her husband, Paul Chartier, died in 2001, and a son, Paul J. Chartier, died in 1997. Surviving are four sons, Richard Chartier of Sayreville, Michael Chartier of Matawan, John Chartier of Dallas, Ga., and Laurence Chartier of South River; two daughters, Judiann Chartier and Suzette Chartier Vignapiano, both of South River; a brother, John Stapleton of East Brunswick; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A Mass was offered at St. Mary's Church, South River. Interment was in Washington Monumental Cemetery, South River.

Emmanuel Vastardis

Mr. Vastardis, 73, of Holmdel, died Nov. 19, 2006, at home. He was the founding owner of the Colonial Diner, East Brunswick. Prior to his retirement, he was the owner of the Red Oak Diner, Hazlet. A son, James Vastardis, died in 1980. Surviving are his wife, Irene Politis-Vastardis; a daughter, Maria Vastardis of Long Branch; a son, Thomas of East Brunswick; a brother, Michael Vastardis of Greece; a sister, Evanthia Vastardis, also of Greece; and two grandchildren. A service was held at Kimisistis Theotokou Church, Holmdel. Interment was in Washington Monumental Cemetery, South River. Memorial contributions may be made to the Greek Children's Cancer Fund, P.O. Box 5415000, Flushing, NY 11358.
