            The East Brunswick/Spotswood Goldenbear Chargers defeated the East Chester Blue Devils in a 49-28 shootout to place 15th in the country. Trailing 6-0, GBC quarterback Dean Vitale (14-for-15 for 277 yards and five touchdowns) hit Tyler Mataya with a 47-yard pass to make it 8-6. Trailing again, Vitale raced 58 yards for the second score, making it 14-12.

      Rams hoops team has reasons for optimism
            Last year, Mike Delaversano's second year as coach of the South River High School boys basketball team was a learning experience for his players, a largely untested group that went 4-19. Most of those athletes are back this winter, and the coach, whose Rams open the season on Dec. 15 against Middlesex, expects a turnaround.

      Sayreville swim team has plenty of potential
            The Sayreville High School swim team is off to a 1-1 start as it looks to improve upon last winter's 2-7 mark. Coach Sarah Rodis-Magaw's Bombers are once again competing as a co-ed team. Thus far, Sayreville has scored a victory over Rahway and lost to St. Joseph's. The team was scheduled to swim against East Brunswick yesterday.

      Rams give Flashes all they can handle in defeat
            The South River High School football team has nothing left to prove to anyone. Not after the performance they put on in the Central Jersey Group I championship game on Friday at Rutgers Stadium.
