            Monroe Recreation's winter track program begins on Jan. 22. Participants must register at the Community Center before the program begins. It will be held at the Brookside School from Jan. 22-March 26, and at Monroe High School from April 16-June 11. The program runs from 6:45-8 p.m., and the fee is $10 for Monroe residents and $20 for nonresidents (make checks payable to Monroe Recreation).

      Rutgers' historic year puts program in spotlight
      Coach knows, with success comes heightened expectations
            When the Rutgers University football team (11-2) beat Kansas State (7-6) by the final score of 37-10 on Dec. 28 in the Texas Bowl, it marked the end to one of the most illustrious seasons in school history. The win was the school's first-ever bowl victory and validated the notion that the Scarlet Knights' program has reached a level few thought was possible.

      South River still shooting for a state playoff berth
            It's been a mixed bag for the South River High School boys basketball team thus far this year as the Rams have managed a 2-4 record. That's not so bad, considering that coach Mike Delaversano's squad went 4-19 in a rebuilding campaign last winter. Still, Delaversano, who has his ambitious sights set on a state tournament bid, is far from satisfied.

      Bomber bowlers are making a strong debut
            The Sayreville High School bowling team has been several years in the making, but its debut season in the Greater Middlesex Conference's (GMC) White Division has been stellar thus far. Sayreville's boys team is 10-0 following Wednesday's 3-1 win over Perth Amboy and the Bombers are sitting atop the White Division ahead of Colonia (9-1-1).
