The Solomon Schechter Day School of Raritan Valley, East Brunswick, still has sponsorship opportunities available for its primary fund-raising event of the year, "An Evening With Henry Winkler," set for 6 p.m. on March 22 at the East Brunswick Jewish Center, 511 Ryders Lane.
The fundraiser will feature the well-known actor, producer, director and best-selling children's author as he shares his story of struggle and triumph.
Despite dyslexia, Winkler received degrees from Emerson College, Boston, and the Yale School of Drama, New Haven, Conn., and has achieved great professional and personal success. Punctuating his anecdotes with humor, Winkler will speak about his careers, his education and his commitment to Judaism.
Solomon Schechter Day School of Raritan Valley is a private Jewish school serving students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Fundraising bridges the gap between the costs of operating the school and tuition revenues.

Youngsters invited to free-throw tournament
The South River Police Department, in conjunction with Ecko Unlimited and South River Policemen's Benevolent Association No. 62, will sponsor a Basketball Free-Throw Tournament for all school-age South River youngsters beginning at 10 a.m. on Feb. 17 in the South River Middle School gymnasium, Montgomery Street.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each of six age categories and to the overall champion.

Concert series to begin at Church
Several musical events are planned for the 2007 Concert Series at The Presbyterian Church of Jamesburg, West Church Street and Gatzmer Avenue.
The schedule is as follows:
* Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. - Jeff Hoos, tenor;
* March 17 at 6 p.m. - Shea Velloso, organ;
* April 14 at 6 p.m. - Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing;
* May 19 at 6 p.m. - Patriotic Concert;
* June 2 at 6 p.m. - Choir Festival.
Admission to all concerts is free of charge; however, a free-will offering will be accepted. All proceeds will be used to fund the church's concert series and music program.

Family Pasta Night scheduled at OLOL
Our Lady of Lourdes (OLOL) School, 44 Cleveland Ave., Milltown, will hold a Family Pasta Night from 1-7 p.m. on Feb. 18.
Dinner will include pasta, meatballs, sausage and peppers, salad, bread, beverages, dessert, coffee and tea. The event also will feature music and raffles.
Tickets cost $11 for adults, $5 for children age 12 and under, and are available in advance at the OLOL Church Rectory, 233 N. Main St., or on the evening of the event at the door.

Sacred Heart HSA plans Lenten Fish Fry
The HSA of Sacred Heart School, Cedar Street, South Amboy, will host its annual Lenten Fish Fry from 4-7 p.m. on Feb. 23 in the school cafeteria (Walnut Street entrance).
Dinner will include sandwich, fries, salad, dessert and a drink. Pizza, tuna fish sandwiches, fish sandwiches and pierogi also will be available.

St. Patrick's Day gala next up at O.B. VFW
The Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7508 will sponsor its annual St. Patrick's Bash beginning at 6 p.m. on March 3 at the post home, 17 Bordentown Ave., Old Bridge. The event will include a corned beef dinner, free beer and soda, entertainment and dancing. Donation is $15 per person. Tickets will be sold in advance only; no tickets will be available at the door.

Gala to raise funds for Rett syndrome research
A Silent Angels Gala to benefit the International Rett Syndrome Association (IRSA) will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 10 at the Westmount Country Club, West Paterson. Robin Turner will be the honored guest. The event will feature dinner, dancing, a silent auction, a raffle and more.
Tickets cost $150 per person. IRSA has earmarked all proceeds from the event to fund Rett syndrome research.

Learning center to offer free youth sessions
Kiddie Academy Child Care Learning Center, 410 Main St., Spotswood, will sponsor two free upcoming programs for youngsters. Sessions will feature a story, crafts and other activities. Preschoolers are invited to attend classes from 10-10:45 a.m., Feb. 28-March 28. A program for youngsters ages 6-10 is set for 4:15-5:15 p.m., March 8-April 19. Class will not meet on April 5. Bereavement group forming in Monroe
Jewish Family and Vocational Service (JFVS) of Southern Middlesex County, Concordia Shopping Center, Monroe, is forming a new bereavement group.
Individuals who have experienced the loss of a spouse or significant other are invited to join. A licensed clinical social worker will lead the group.

Township clarifies recycling schedule
East Brunswick officials are notifying residents this week that, due to a scheduling change, all recycling districts will be collected exactly as stated in the township's Recycling and Solid Waste Calendar. Residents must check the calendar to determine their recycling collection day.
Megilla reading, Purim Spiel next up at temple
Congregation Etz Chaim Monroe Township Jewish Center, Cornell Avenue, will hold its Reading of the Megilla service, including the annual Purim Spiel with entertainment by the Matzoh Ball Band and a presentation by the temple's religious-school students. Yo-yo champ to display winning ways
Pat Cuartero, the reigning yo-yo world champion, will demonstrate his artistry from 7-8 p.m. on Feb. 16 at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center. After the program, yo-yos will be available for purchase and adjusted to each owner's height. The 25-year-old Cuartero, the winner of the Sport Ladder Division at the 2006 World Yo-Yo Contest in Orlando, Fla., has been featured on several television programs including ESPN's "Cold Pizza."

Fish-Fry Dinners on menu at Elks lodge
Jamesburg Elks Lodge No. 2180 will offer its annual Fish-Fry Dinners on Fridays, Feb. 16-April 6, at the Elks lodge, 74 W. PTA to present casino night, basket raffle
The Milltown PTA will host A Knight of Chance fundraiser from 7 p.m. to midnight on March 3 at the Farrington Manor, East Brunswick. The event will combine a casino night and basket raffle. Admission is $100 per couple, $60 per person, and will include $100 play money per person; games such as craps, roulette, blackjack and video horse racing; and raffle baskets featuring sports tickets, theme baskets, spa baskets, televisions, cell phones and more. Tickets available for St. Stan's Fish Fry
St. Stan's HSA will hold its annual Fish Fry from 4-7 p.m. on Feb. 23 in the St. Stanislaus Kostka School cafeteria, 221 MacArthur Ave., Sayreville.
Dinners will include filet of flounder; vegetable; choice of baked potato, fries or haluski (noodles and cabbage); beverage; and dessert. In addition, the kitchen also will offer a-la-carte pizza, macaroni and cheese, clam chowder, mozzarella sticks and haluski. Tickets cost $12 per person. Advance order is strongly recommended; only a limited amount of tickets will be sold at the door on the day of the event.
