      Rec slates skating trip, Breakfast With Bunny
            The Helmetta Recreation Department will sponsor two upcoming youth events. A trip to a roller rink is planned for March 16. The bus will depart at 7 p.m. from Helmetta Borough Hall, Main Street. Return is set for approximately 10:30 p.m.

      Historical panel sets calendar, extends exhibit
            The East Brunswick Historical Society will be open from 2-4 p.m. on March 11, April 15, May 13, Aug. 12, Sept. 19 and Oct. 14 at its new home, 78 Milltown Road, East Brunswick. The public is invited. The society's current "Shipwrecks and Lighthouses Along the New Jersey Coastline" exhibit has been extended due to popular interest.

      Fire department slates St. Patrick's Day gala
            The Milltown Fire Department will hold a St. Patrick's Day Dinner on March 17 at the Milltown Senior Center, Violet Terrace. Seatings are set for 5 and 7 p.m. The menu will include corned beef, potatoes and Irish soda bread. Takeout orders will be available. Beer and wine will be offered for purchase.

      Book and Bake Sale coming to S.R. Library
            The Friends of the South River Library will host a Book and Bake Sale from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 17 at the library, 55 Appleby Ave. The event will feature used books, magazines, assorted music, DVDs and VHS tapes. Shoppers will have the opportunity to fill a box for $4. Homemade baked goods will be available for purchase.

      Church offers babka, pierogi, blintz, chrusciki
            St. Euphrosynia Belarusian Greek Orthodox Church, Whitehead Avenue, South River, is taking advance orders for its sixth annual Easter Bake Sale. Babka, pierogi, blintzes and chrusciki are available for purchase. Food pickup is scheduled for 3-7 p.m. on April 5 at the church.

      Bargain Book Sale will mark 33rd year
            The 33rd annual Bargain Book and Media Sale, sponsored by the East Brunswick Friends of the Library, will take place March 19-25 in the J.C. Penney court at Brunswick Square Mall, Route 18, East Brunswick. Hours on opening day, March 19, will be 7-9:30 p.m. The sale will continue March 20-24 from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and on March 25 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

      Spring Fashion Event on tap at senior center
            The South River Office on Aging will sponsor a Spring Fashion Event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 12 at the South River Senior Center, 1 William St. The event will feature fashions by Coldwater Creek and lunch by Ria Mar Restaurant, South River. The South River Red Hat Society Rambling Rosettes will serve as hostesses. There will be music, prizes and discounts.

      Rosary society offers trip to Las Vegas
            St. Stanislaus Kostka Rosary Altar Society will sponsor an Oct. 14-18 trip to Las Vegas. Cost is $599 per person (plus $46 in taxes and fees), based on double occupancy, and includes round-trip air transportation from Newark Airport, four nights at the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino, bellman services, round-trip transfers and all taxes.

      Military spouses to get free fitness center access
            Ladies Workout Express, 3979 Route 516, Old Bridge, is donating free full memberships to the spouses of active military personnel who have been deployed overseas. Effective immediately, individuals with spouses overseas will have full use of the fitness center at no charge for the duration of their spouse's tour.

            Spotswood High School Project Graduation 2007 will sponsor a fund-raising basketball game, featuring the Harlem Wizards vs. Spotswood High School students, administrators and teachers, from 7-10 p.m. on March 10 in the gym at the high school, Summerhill Road. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

            The Milltown Department of Recreation will offer a variety of upcoming events. All trips and programs are open to residents and nonresidents. Reservations are being taken to see "Grease" on Broadway in September. Pricing and seating are to be determined.

      Bone-marrow drive set for temple member
            Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple will hold a drive to find a possible bone-marrow donor for temple member Alan Rubinfeld from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 11 at the synagogue, 222 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick. Rubinfeld has leukemia that has resisted chemotherapy. He is left with only one option: a successful bone-marrow transplant.

            The Independent Order of Odd Fellows will host its 20th annual Arthritis Foundation Odd Ball from 1-5 p.m. on March 17 at the East Brunswick Chateau, Cranbury Road. Cost is $29 per person and includes a three-course luncheon, music and dancing.

            The next meeting of the Chug Ivrit club for intermediate and advanced Hebrew speakers will take place at 11 a.m. on March 11 at a private home in the Highland Park area. Chug Ivrit is sponsored by the Raritan Valley Chapter of Hadassah. Meetings are free of charge and open to the public. Men and women are invited.

            The Molly Pitcher Stitchers Quilt Guild will meet at 7:30 p.m. on March 12 at Neff Chapel, Old Tennent Church, Tennent Road, Tennent section of Manalapan.             American Legion Post No. 214 will sponsor its annual St. Patrick's Day/St. Joseph's Day Dinner from 2-6 p.m. on March 11 at the post home, 264 Whitehead Ave., South River. Guests may select a corned beef or ham dinner. Donation is $8 for adults, $4 for children under age 10.

      County resident wins VFW essay contest
            Sarah VanNess, representing District No. 8, Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary, Middlesex County, recently won the district, state and national awards in the VFW Patriotic Pens Youth Essay Contest. The essay theme was "Citizenship in America." Sarah, who was sponsored by VFW Post and Auxiliary No. 5479, Dunellen, received a college scholarship.

            March 8 + Basketball Game, featuring staff members at Spotswood High School and members of the Spotswood Police Department vs. a team of Spotswood High School seniors, 7 p.m., in the gym at the high school, Summerhill Road. Items donated by the Trenton Thunder, Lakewood Blueclaws and Trenton Titans sports teams will be raffled off at halftime. Proceeds go to the senior class.

            The Social Action Committee of Temple B'nai Shalom will sponsor an event titled "Raising Awareness About Hunger" at 10:30 a.m. on March 11 at the temple, Fern and Old Stage roads, East Brunswick. Topics will include fair trade and hunger in Middlesex County. Participants will learn how their shopping habits can help African farmers live with dignity.

            The Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership (LBWP) will sponsor a March 10 bus trip to the Legends of Ireland Flower Show at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Philadelphia. Participants will walk through more than 50 full-scale gardens, including Irish Celtic Cloisters and backyard displays.

            The South River Public Library, 55 Appleby Ave., will offer a variety of upcoming programs for youngsters and parents. "Toddler Time," activities and play for youngsters ages 18 months to 3 years with a caregiver, is scheduled for 11 a.m. on the first and third Thursdays of every month.

            Our Lady of Lourdes (OLL) School, 44 Cleveland Ave., Milltown, will host a Mother-Son Sports Night on March 23. Doors will open at 6 p.m.; dinner and refreshments will be available for purchase. Music and games are set for 7-9 p.m. Boys in prekindergarten-eighth grade are invited to bring their mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, aunts, big sisters, etc., to the event.
