      Chargers off to winning start on softball diamond
            Talk about a turnaround. The Spotswood High School softball team struggled to a 6-14 record last year, but this season, Coach Stefanie Bromberg's Chargers have already far exceeded that level, posting a 9-4 mark through the first 13 games. Most recently, on Tuesday, SHS crushed Cardinal McCarrick, 15-5.

            The U9 Old Bridge Hurricanes had a perfect weekend, first beating the Toms River Wave, 2-0, and then defeating Wall Rovers by the same score of 2-0. In the first game, the offensive fire power were goals scored by Mackenzie Mahoney and Victoria Kamvissis. The offensive play of Isabella D'Acunto, Katie Lombardi, Julia Micciola and Meagan Donohue kept the pressure on.

      Crummy weather leads to a lull in fishing
            Unfortunately, there has not been much action offshore due to last week's storm. Mackerel have not been spotted offshore, leaving party boats still making trips for ling and keeping their eyes open in hopes of spotting those monster schools of mackerel.

            Shortstop Jeff Toth, of Sayreville, scored the winning run in the top of the 10th inning to give The College of New Jersey a 4-3 win over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Friday. Toth reached base with a single and stole second. He advanced to third on an error and continued home on a second error.

      Baseball team is ranked No. 6 in the country
            Brookdale Community College's young baseball team couldn't have asked for two better leaders than sophomores Paddy Matera and Joe Behan. They are the embodiment of college baseball and have been the heart and soul of the 26-10 Blues, who are headed toward another Garden State Athletic Conference crown.
