      EBPD will sponsor Youth Police Academy

      The East Brunswick Police Department (EBPD) is accepting applications for its second annual Youth Police Academy to be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., June 25-29, at Churchill Junior High School, Norton Road.

      The academy is open to youngsters in sixth, seventh or eighth grades. Applications are available at police headquarters.

      The weeklong academy will feature field trips to the New Jersey State Police Museum, the police training facility and other locations within East Brunswick.

      The program can accommodate 40 students; spots will be filled on a first-come basis for youngsters who have not previously attended. If openings remain when registration ends, spots will be available to repeat students. Applications must be received by

      June 15.

      A $60 fee will cover the cost of academy uniforms and graduation. The youngster/cadet will be required to wear the department-issued uniform each day. A formal graduation ceremony is set for 7 p.m. on June 29 at Churchill School.

      Free event at Zimmerli Art Museum May 6

      Zimmerli Art Museum, 71 Hamilton St., New Brunswick, will present a family event May 6 from 12:30-4:30 p.m.

      The free event will feature caricatures, scavenger hunts of the museum's collections with prizes, a children's craft workshop, face painters and gallery tours. There will also be a performance by The Divine in Motion: The Dancers of Isadora Duncan, "Uncle John's Traveling Musical Puppet Show," and storytelling with Ellen Musikant of the New Jersey Storytelling Network.       Wrestling fundraiser

      in South River May 11

      National Wrestling Superstars (NWS) will present a fundraiser May 11 at 7:45 p.m. at South River Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, 31 Reid St. Proceeds will benefit the Disabled Firefighters Fund and Sayreville Knights of Columbus Columbian Squires.

      Townwide yard sale scheduled for May 19

      Jamesburg residents will sell their "treasures" during the annual Jamesburg Spring Townwide Yard Sale scheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 19. The event, which will take place rain or shine, is sponsored by the borough of Jamesburg and the Jamesburg Civic Association.

      Residents may sell in their own yards or rent table space at Buckelew Park. Nonresidents also may rent space in the park. Rental cost is $10 per table. Proceeds will benefit the Jamesburg Historical Association.

      Registered home addresses will be listed on a yard-sale flier/map that will be available on line at www.jamesburg.info and www.jamesburghistory.com beginning May 17. Printed copies of the list also will be distributed to Jamesburg businesses.

      Registration forms are available at Jamesburg Borough Hall, from various Jamesburg merchants, and at www.jamesburg.info or www.jamesburghistory.com. Forms must be received by 5 p.m. on May 15 to ensure a listing on the map. Forms for Buckelew Park rental space must be received by 5 p.m. on May 18.

      Applications may be mailed to or dropped off at Gray Rock Supply, 64 W. Railroad Ave., Jamesburg, NJ 08831. Buckelew Park rental forms must be accompanied by a check made payable to the Jamesburg Historical Association.

      Columnist Mike Straka at Monroe Library May 9

      The Monroe Township Public Library, 4 Municipal Plaza, will welcome FOXNews columnist Mike Straka May 9 at 7 p.m. as part of its "Hot Topics Author Series."

      Straka will lead a discussion on topics from his new book, "Celebrities Are Ruining Our Country ... and Other Reasons Why We're All in Trouble."

      Alborada to perform 'The Feast of Sarah'

      Monmouth University will present the Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre in "The Feast of Sarah: A Gypsy Festival" at 8 p.m. on May 5 at the university's Pollak Theatre, 400 Cedar Ave., West Long Branch.

      The cross-cultural performance will feature the entire Alborada company, the Daughters of Sofia Tribal Dance Company, Kalman Maygar Hungarian Dance Ensemble and the Gorcsi Brothers Band. Alborada principal dancer Ricardo Santiago and resident guest artist Peter Suarez will create a gypsy duel.

      A re-creation of the oldest religious festival in Saint Maries de la Mer, Camargue, France, to which gypsies made their annual pilgrimage, the production will depict extended families of Spanish, Hungarian and Balkan origin meeting and celebrating with dance and music around a caravan and campfire.

      There will be gypsy spiritual dances and music and dances from the Balkans. Spanish gypsies will use tambourines and "zills" (Arabic finger instruments) to highlight their Arabic background, and Spanish and Hungarian gypsy cultures will be joined in a fusion dance.

      Funding for the production is provided in part by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the American Music Center Live Music for Dance of New York.

      Tickets cost $25 each, $23 for seniors, $12 for children.

      Cheesequake Park slates variety of programs

      Cheesequake State Park, Old Bridge, will hold an event titled "Mysterious Migration" for children ages 8 and older May 6 at 1 p.m. and consist of a one-hour hike. "Birding Basics" for ages 14 and older will be held May 13 at 1 p.m. Topics include field identification, equipment, and areas for bird viewing.

      A wildflower walk will take place May 20 at 1 p.m. and feature information about the park's wildflowers and how to identify the flowers. An osprey walk and talk for children ages 8 and older will be held May 27 at 1 p.m. The walk will begin at the Spring Hill parking lot. The fee will be the park entrance fee.

      Dance to the oldies at O.B. Knights hall

      The Black Box Series at nonprofit Villagers Theatre, 415 Demott Lane, Somerset, will present "Hospitality Suite" May 11-26. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., with a matinee May 20 at 2 p.m. The drama is produced by Jessica Pfeiffer, Old Bridge, and the stage manager is Francine Mondi, North Brunswick. The drama concerns two salesmen and a youngster from the research department gathered at a hotel's hospitality suite to host a delegates' party in order to reel in one big fish.       'Cohan Show' coming to Marasco theater June 2

      The Monroe Township Cultural Arts Commission will present "The George M. Cohan Show," a one-man portrayal of the famous song and dance man, at the Richard P. Marasco Theatre for the Performing Arts, 1629 Perrineville Road, Monroe, at 7 p.m. June 2. Cohan, considered the "father of the American musical comedy," was an entertainer, playwright, composer, lyricist, actor, singer, dancer, director and producer in the early 20th century.       The Immaculate Conception Fathers Club of Spotswood will sponsor a Texas Hold'em Tournament May 19 in the auditorium at Immaculate Conception School, 23 Manalapan Road, Spotswood. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the tournament runs from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m.

      'Shabbat Across America' May 4

      Guest will be Dolores Ziegler, a signature member of the American Watercolor Society (AWS). Ziegler's art was chosen for the AWS traveling show in 2005, and her work has been published in Artist magazine. She will present a "watermedia" demonstration at the meeting.

      Guild members are offering an exhibit of multimedia artwork through May 25 at the Marketplace Barnes and Noble, Route 130 north, Hamilton. A second exhibit of approximately 50 paintings will be displayed through May 30 at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, 675 Hoes Lane, Piscataway.
