E.B. showed responsibility by raising awareness of Darfur

I am proud to live in a community that hosted an event in support of Global Days for Darfur (April 23-29). More than 300 U.S. cities in 44 states planned events, and East Brunswick was one of them.

On April 26, children, teens and adults from North Jersey and Central Jersey performed a staged reading of the play "Judgment on Genocide" at the East Brunswick Public Library. The play is an enactment of a citizen's tribunal. The accused is the president of Sudan. The tribunal provides a framework for the actors to read the eyewitness testimonies of Darfuri men, women and children.

The tribunal is an excellent tool for teaching adults and young students about the complex situation in Darfur. It offers an opportunity to discuss the concept of international law and the work of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The play is timely, given that the ICC is currently gathering evidence to try the criminals responsible for the crimes against humanity taking place in Sudan.

According to international law, it is the responsibility of the international community to protect civilians when their own government does not protect them. East Brunswick took on that responsibility by hosting a very important event during Global Days for Darfur.
