      Local stars' selection a feather in state's cap
            Twenty years ago, there was Jim Dowd, and now there's James van Riemsdyk. Dowd is a veteran of 14 NHL seasons, who played this past season with the New Jersey Devils after becoming a local hockey legend growing up in Brick in the 1970s and 1980s.

      Monroe 8U team is rolling through summer
            The summer of dreams continues for the Monroe Township 8U baseball all-stars as they head into the Cal Ripken State Championships, beginning July 20, in Edison. The Monroe 8s just won the Cal Ripken District 9 Championship on July 1, going 5-0, by beating East Brunswick American in the championship game, 21-2.

      Esposito hosting baseball camp at St. Joseph
            METUCHEN - With the dog days of summer in full swing, area baseball players ages 7-16 can get their own swing on at Coach Paul Esposito's Summer Baseball Camp at St. Joseph's High School in Metuchen. Esposito is the current head coach for the Falcon team at the high school and is opening the field up to players July 9 to begin three weeks of sessions.

      Sports Shorts
            Matthew Sze of Monroe Township has won the Bronze Medal in Traditional Forms at the American Taekwondo Association's (ATA) 2007 World Championships in Little Rock. Sze competed against nine finalists from throughout the world in the boys 8-10 age group, second- and third-degree Black Belt Tournament of Champions on June 21-22. Sze trains at ATA Blackbelt Academy in Monroe.

      Anglers find there's still plenty of bass out there
            July is here, and the bass are still around.Find the bunker pods and you'll find the trophies. Along the beaches and under the bunker schools, anglers have been picking up some serious-size fish. Reports over the past two days claim that major pods of bait and fish have been showing up from Shark River all the way past Barnegat Inlet.
