      Russian poetry to be heard at library
            The East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center, will host a Russian poetry reading from 7-8 p.m. on Aug. 4 in the library café area. Inna Chatsky will read selections from her collected poetry in Russian. The title of Chatsky's book of poems in Russian translates as "Here All Alone by Myself" in English.

      RCIA registration under way at church
            St. Mary's Parish, South Amboy, is accepting registration for any adult (age 14 or older) who is interested in preparing for Baptism, First Communion or Confirmation. The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) begins with several weeks of inquiry sessions.

      Boating-safety exam scheduled for Aug. 4
            Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 2-1, 167 Main St., Sayreville, will conduct a Boating Safety Test Out Examination at 9 a.m. on Aug. 4. Individuals who take the exam must have been born prior to 1979 and certify that they have at least 100 hours of boating experience. Proof of age must be provided prior to taking the examination.

      Fairgrounds benches, tables offered for sale
            Benches and tables to be placed throughout the Middlesex County Fairgrounds, Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, may be purchased through the Middlesex County Fair Association. A plaque stating the sponsor's name and other information, such as "in memory of," "in honor of," "compliments of," etc., will be attached to each bench or table.

      Registration under way for youth talent show
            The Middlesex County Fair will hold its annual talent show for young people at 4 p.m. on Aug. 11 at the fairgrounds, Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. Participants will be separated into two categories, ages 5-11 and 12-18. A piano will not be available. All talents are welcome.

      Blood drive planned for Aug. 4 at O.B. church
            St. Thomas the Apostle Church, in cooperation with Knights of Columbus Council No. 4815, will hold a summer blood drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 4 in the parish auditorium, Route 18 south, Old Bridge. Donors must be between the ages of 17 and 75, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in reasonably good health.

      Icelandic comedy-drama next up for film festival
            The 25th annual Summer International Film Festival at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center, will continue on Aug. 7 with 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. screenings of the Icelandic comedy-drama "Noi." The 2003 movie, which is rated PG-13, has a running time of 93 minutes.

      Donors sought for blood drive at fair
            The Middlesex County Fair Association will host a blood drive at the fair from 5-9 p.m. Aug. 6-10, noon to 6 p.m. on Aug. 11, and noon to 5 p.m. on Aug. 12, at the fairgrounds, Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. To express its appreciation to individuals donating blood, the fair association will grant free same-day fair admission to donors.

      Curtain to rise on 'Bye Bye Birdie'
            The Sayreville Main Street Theatre Company will present the musical "Bye Bye Birdie" at 8 p.m. on Aug. 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25 and at 2 p.m. on Aug. 12 at the Main Street Theatre, 3018 Bordentown Ave., Parlin section of Sayreville. The show will be directed by Vic Morosco and musically directed by David Raunick, with choreography by Liat Pearlman and Susan Zuckerman.

      Arabic newspaper added at E.B. Library
            The Arabic-language newspaper Al-Ahram is now part of the world-language newspaper collection at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center. The weekly paper, published in Cairo, Egypt, may be found in the World Language-English as a Second Language section next to the Chinese newspapers.

      Teen-novel author to visit East Brunswick Library
            Jordan Sonnenblick, author of novels for teenage readers, will appear from 6-9 p.m. on Aug. 8 at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center. Sonnenblick, who has family ties to East Brunswick, will discuss the process of writing and getting published, read from his works and answer questions.

            The East Brunswick Division of Recreation and the East Brunswick Arts Commission will sponsor "Oh, What a Night!," a concert featuring Ragdoll, a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons tribute band, at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 2 outdoors around the East Brunswick Municipal Pond, opposite the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center.

      Car washes, bake sales to aid Cadette troop
            Monroe Girl Scout Cadette Troop No. 1036 will hold car washes and bake sales from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 12 and Sept. 8 at the Monroe Township Recreation Center, 120 Monmouth Road. All donations will be accepted. The sales will raise money for all Cadette events, including an upcoming trip to Canada.

      Safe-boating course coming to Sayreville
            Coast Guard Flotilla Auxiliary 2-1, 167 Main St., Sayreville, will offer "America's Boating Course" from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 11. The cost is $55, including textbook. A New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.
