      Bears expect to be an improved team this fall
      East Brunswick team to feature a veteran-laden defense
            Last year, the East Brunswick High School football team had a mixed record, going 5-5, and 2-5 in its division. This season, Coach Marcus Borden says, the Bears have a "mixed group, with more players back on defense. On offense, we run a triple option, and we'll do that again this year, though we probably won't be throwing the ball as much.

      Old Bridge short on experience, long on talent
            The Old Bridge High School football team will take the field Sept. 15 against Williamstown with practically a whole new look as the Knights seek to contend for the Greater Middlesex Conference's (GMC) Red Division crown.

            The East Brunswick- Spotswood Golden Bear Chargers Pop Warner organization opened its season last weekend against the Piscataway Braves. The very young Mitey Mites lost to Piscataway, 28-7, but tried their hardest to keep it close, as the defense played hard the whole game.

            Pat Dowling has to like the preseason prospects for his Monroe High School football team. Last year the Falcons went 8-2 and made the state playoffs for the first time in school history. This season, Monroe has the majority of the squad back.

      Blues, fluke lingering, while tuna trips cash in
            Aboard Captain Dave from Atlantic Highlands, first mate Brett Chamberlain tells me the majority of their charters were for bluefish, and no one was disappointed. Weakfish are long overdue, as the harbor is loaded with peanut bunker. There is still a body of fluke to be caught, and nicesize fish, too. The Hi-Mar charter had a very good catch.
